Hydraulic Clutch Adjustment????
« on: November 27, 2007, 10:53:39 AM »

First of all, I guess I should change my Avatar to my new bike instead of the Shovelhead, but that will wait till the weekend.

I did check to see if there was a transmission / clutch forum, but didn't see one; so here goes.

As you all know I just received my new '08 SERK Annie and I have a question about the clutch.  So some of you '07 guys may be able to answer my question.

I have new a '08 Touring and SE supplement manual on order and they aren't due to ship until later this month or early December, so please don't ask me to look it up.

When I pull in on the clutch, it feels great, but when I release the lever the bike starts moving just off the grip.  This would probably explain why others have posted that they have issues finding neutral when stopped at a light.  I know, I know, you just shift into neutral before you stop, but you can't always do that.  With a bit of tapping on the shifter I eventually find neutral without much of a problem.

I know that these have a hydraulic slave cylinder to disengage the clutch, but there still needs to be a mechanical adjustment, probably under the derby similar to all the older cable clutches.

So can I take a bit of the slack out so I disengage the clutch just a bit more?  This would also give me a better feel for taking off from a light etc.

Thanks again for the help in advance.

Dan, on our 06 I noticed the same thing. After a 1000 miles or so the friction point seemed to move out a bit. Or I got more accustomed to it, anyway, it seems fine to me now.

How about a picture of the Nomad?  :2vrolijk_21:

Dan,

The clutch does smooth out with some time. Given that, there is no adjustment at all for the hydraulic clutch. The clutch rod is kept inside the clutch hub by a snap ring, not a threaded rod as on the cable clutches.

Well fine,,,, just fine!!!! :( :(

I guess I'll just let it wear in and live with it.  You would think that they would provide some sort of available tweak, but then it is Mo Co...

Bojiboy, it's still in project stage, but I do have it for sale as it is.

In the ad I have pricing etc.

But to wet you whistle, here is a picture of the beast.  I had a Beck Racing Engines 540 BBC 660 hp and a new 4L80E trans with a 3,500 stall converter.

If anyone has any questions about it, you can PM me or e-mail me at danjlockwood@charter.net

Back to the new SERK, I really like the way it rides, handles and goes like a streak.  I think I said that before, but a bit of redundancy is necessary.

Thanks for the information on the clutch.

Though there is no adjustment on the hydraulic clutch and all who have responded report the same thing that I have experienced as far as once the clutch is broken in, there is one factor that can cause different clutch feel and function and that is air in the line. I haven't had a problem in that area but when you think of how hydraulic brakes respond differently with some air in them you can understand how it might affect the clutch movement. Just a thought...
Congrats on the new SERK!!

Dan...give it some time to wear in a bit.  If you're used to the cable, it's a totally different feel, but once you get used to it and get back on one with a cable, you'll go "man, this sucks"  ;)

Dan:

TC's right. You'll adapt, quickly I think, and start to like it a lot. Freaked me out just like all the others and now I prefer it over the cable. BTW - first service, dump all the Syn3 and replace w/ your favorite brand of lubricant. Everything will work better. Lots and lots and lots of lube discussion here. Enjoy.

Dan, I have my cable adjusted to engage right off the bar on my WG. I prefer that, so it wasn't difficult to get used to. But the feel of the hydraulic is much better. I'm planning on converting my WG to hydraulic on my 110 Revtech evo w/6-speed now too! ;)

When i put on new bars They didn't bleed the clutch enough and I had the same problem. i think that you should have about 1/2 inch before the clutch engages. i would have HD check it out . Billy

When new my '07 had a very grabby clutch with about five degrees of engagement range on the lever.  But neutral was always a one try event.  The engagement did improve greatly, but neutral has become almost impossible to hit no matter how many tries.  Most of the time I just have to shut it down.  There doesn't seem to be any drag going on, and I have Mobil 1 in the primary and transmission.
