PSI in rear Shocks
« on: March 20, 2005, 03:29:01 PM »

I would like to poll you guys and Gals to find out what PSI in the stock rear shocks you feel is best for a few areas,

Solo 200 lbs.
Solo 200 lbs and full gear in the bags and tourpack.
Dual 200/150 and full gear.

I know what the manual says for a range but I would like a tried and true number...
Thanks to all who reply!

LeRoy.

My advice to you would be to go with the Progressive 440 shocks.  Then you don't have to worry about air pressure.

LeRoy, I recently converted to the Progressives, but rode with the air shocks for over a year.  I weigh around 220.  When solo, I kept them no lower than 15psi.  When solo and packed with gear, I went up to around 25-30.  Two-up with no gear I ran 35psi and with gear 45psi.

In my opinion, the stock air shocks seemed to like the pressures on the high side, so don't be afraid to experiment.  Just be sure to use a good pump like the H-D one or the one that Progressive sells which is specifically made for this purpose.  They have nice no-loss connectors and a dial guage so you can get precise pressures.

I like a firmer ride, but  I usually run about 35 all the time. I weigh 175. We haven't gone on any long trips yet, so I don't know how it's going to be, really loaded down. I was afraid of going too much higher, because the owners manual doesn't recommend it. that's why I'm really looking into a trailer. The ride is a lot more difficult to dial in than on my 01 Road King Classic.

LeRoy, I still have the air shocks on my SERK. At 200 lbs I run them at 10 psig and the ride is not bad. For two up riding I'll run 20 psig.

Second the Progressive 440's....put on the 12" Standards...2 clicks of preload and big difference, no bottoming out, handling improved, and no air hassles.

I like mine a little firm since I'm an agressive rider.  But even with the wife on the back (I'm 220 and she's about 120) and another 100 lbs or so of junk, I never went over the recommended air pressure (know of two guys that did and blew a shock and one blew the line).
