Harley Exhaust System Design
« on: January 04, 2012, 06:33:34 AM »

I found this to be and interesting read with my mornin Cuppa Java.

Harley Exhaust System Design
http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/exhausttech.htm

In the spirit of the information provided in this article, any thoughts on what would be a Good Exhaust System for the typical 2,500 - 4,500 Range Touring Rider?
A rider who rarely sees a Long/Flat/Straight strech of pavement? One who generally rides on Up/Down Twisty Snakes Mountanous/Coastal most of his riding days?

I am thinking along the lines of either Fullsac or Jackpot "x-pipe", SE-254e or SE-255 Cams and DME Port & Polish my SE103 Heads for my 03 FLHRSEI2.
I mainly ride the coasts of ME and NH and the Mountains\Foothills of ME,NH & VT.

I read that and sure sounds good. But who knows if it is propoganda or not. You can put a spin on just about anything.

I treat everything I read and attempt to verify.
I was interested in Manifold Diameters, Stepped Manifolds and Ceramic Coatings. What does and does not work in a HiPerformance Manifold, not in what they were selling.

After reading this I looked at a Fullsac X-pipeB Manifold and it is ceramic coated and stepped. I have asked for I.D. and Tube Lengths.
I have since received a response from Fullsac. -
Quote
Our B X Pipe is a stepped header from 1.625 to 1.75 to a 15 deg merged X collector.
They also sent me a Dyno Test on a 103 with Fullsac Stage II. x-pipe and woods 555 CAMs.

I had talked to Steve couple years ago about those x-pipes, and he told me he had spent WAY too much R&D to get the power he was looking for, thus the 2 different designs.
You got to know he is anal about this sort of thing, I don't know how many miles he put on his "mule" on that dyno, but, I know its hours and hours.
Rather than try to re-invent what someone else has spent tons of time and money on, I rely on people on this forum to tell me what their experiences are and what works and what doesn't. I'm making another trip to Fullsac soon just to see his new building......2x larger he says. He has lots of work to do, move the dyno, etc, etc. I'm just waiting till all the hard work is done and it's "Miller Time"!
It's interesting reading about the engineering details about whatever people are producing, but, I spend most of my days riding (my 2-wheel riding is going to come to an end soon).
A big thanks to all who contribute to this forum to get me on the "fast track" without having to do too much research!

It's Winter in Maine, temp today is in the single digits. I would very much like to be riding as you suggest.
In lieu of, I use my time to read and hopefully better understand what makes one tick.
