Further proof of "head and eyes"... Truly your best friend on a bike.

Excuse my crude 30 second rendering, but this is called the "keyhole".  It's part of the class and one of the things you have to successfully complete to pass the class.  I'm not certain of the 16' measurement, but 95% sure.

You have to ride in, and out, without putting your feet down or knocking over cones.  The world's hardest u-turn   [smiley=laugh.gif]

If you were to walk your bike into the keyhole using the best angle possible, lock the handlebars, and attempt to push it thru, it would not fit.  The bike cannot physically fit thru it.  [smiley=confused5.gif] But for some reason, if you ride in, look behind you, and keep your head and eyes aimed at the entrance, you CAN fit and get out.  Keep your head and eyes aimed where you want your bike to go!!!  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Red... pushing the bike... will not fit, even with handlebars locked.
Green... riding, head and eyes ALWAYS aimed at the entrance/exit.

I thought "counter steer" was what you did with the little RC cars in the kitchen  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Counter steering..at speed you "push right to go right" and "push left to go left" so if you push the right handlebar grip at speed...say 30-35, you will feel the bike lean to the right and it will go to the right. A gentle push will give you the idea...it can save your butt as stated above...a newer rider not familiar with this can practice in a large empty parking lot. DJW shared some valuable safety tips..

Hey, hadn't been following this thread that close to see it had shifted gears into a riding skills thread.  Yeah, the ridelikeapro videos are GREAT!  The MSF courses are good, but you will learn things through these videos that they don't teach at MSF.  Watching these videos and practicing the exercises a few times will have you doing stuff on your bagger you never thought possible.  Jerry Palladino trains motorcycle units in Florida, so much of what he teaches there is included in his videos.  He's all about "head and eyes," like DJW says.  The slow speed maneuvering that DJ's talking about using the rear brake, friction zone and throttle is a part of Jerry's program.  You wanna improve your riding skills 100-fold and freak all your friends out at the same time, get these videos and start practicing.

If you're still skeptical, DJW and I can give you a little demo in the Valley! [smiley=beerchug.gif]
