Things to do before I die
« on: January 07, 2008, 09:51:36 AM »

It's settling into winter here in the Midwest (Great Plains to you Easterners who think the Midwest starts in western Pennyslvania or Ohio), we got a nice coating of ice overnight that made for Mr. Toad's Wild Ride even with the Jeep on ice tires this morning.  There won't be any actual ride reports for a while around here, so in honor of this, my 100th post, I start a thread of rides you are either actively planning for the upcoming season, giving serious thought to doing sometime, or before I die I'd really like to...

Among mine are what can still be found of Route 66, probably from the Missouri/Kansas border to San Bernadino or so; the Baja Penninsula on a smaller dual-purpose bike; through Estes Park and central Colorado then on to see my brother in Albuquerque; a three-day loop through the Sandhills and other parts of western Nebraska; an Edelweis tour in the Alps because those roads look so good; after sixteen years of saying I should - continuing on from Sturgis to see my bud in northwest Montana and do the Going to the Sun road in Glacier; at some point having the time to just get on the SERK and head west with no real destination or time-frame in mind.

Ultimately I'd like things to include putting it on the trailer and towing it to a new house where it won't be three or four months before a real ride report is possible.  Winter sucks.

If you think it's the journey not the destination you don't live in Nebraska.

Congrats on the 100th post. It's been raining here in SoCal and making headlines!!  I like your trip plans, brings back some great memories. If you get to San Berdo look us up, we go to Baja on the coastal road occasionally and its a great experience. The food, hotels, and scenery are first rate. This year we are looking into the cruise ship/bike trip to Baja and Sadona will also be a destination. Before I die I'd like to go island hopping off the coast of Washington, Canada, and Alaska. There are ferry boats from one island to another as far as you want to go. I've made it as far a Victoria but ran out of time. Think warm bro, Doc

don't forget skydiving, kiss the prettiest girl in the world, help a complete stranger....  ( I just saw the "Bucket List" Sunday)

I like your ideas.  I sold my bike when I got married 19 years ago and bought the CVO and basically said, "I'm going riding with or without you".  Since then  I've committed to York and the NY GTG and she's going on both.  I didn't ask, just told her it was booked and I'd like her to come along.  I'm considering these baby steps toward a trip like yours.

Congrats on the 100th Gecko.  I think this is gonna be a great thread 'cause this country has so many great riding destinations that you really don't even have to cross a border to have a long list. I'll be checking to get ideas as people post their 'dream rides'.   8) har  :drink: spyder

I think I want the same rides as you do.

I want to free Twolandrider before I die.   :2vrolijk_21:  Other than that, my 45 years are complete.  I pray the Good Lord Blesses me with many more days on this mortal coil, but if I die right now, I am a VERY blessed man.

As an owner of a dual purpose bike too, I agree with your statements...Good Luck.

Let's see.....I married a woman 32 (almost 33) years ago that I have fallen more in love with every year....I own two Harley's (a CVO and a rigid EVO, BOTH of which bring smiles to my face).....I've got two sons I am very proud of (one is a Harley mechanic) and I'm going to be a grandparent in early March for the first time.

I've been in a hot air balloon....been bungy-jumping.....ridden "The Dragon" a couple of times....been to Italy on an incredible vacation and had the opportunity to spend time with both of my parents before they passed away. In fact, I was with each of them as they shed their earthly bonds and I look forward to ......"meeting them in the clearing at the end of the path" when it's my time to go.

All in all....I can say that I've done most of the important things on my list.  Since we either grow or die, I guess the following are the things on my "bucket list":

1. Teach my grandson to throw a baseball.....LEFT handed, like his grandpa.
2. Skydive...more than once.
3. Run a 10k without the assistance of oxygen (I don't really know if I would require oxygen, but I'm pretty sure I would).
4. Earn an Iron Bu** patch.
5. See the sunrise in the Tuscan countryside one more time.
6. Learn to speak Spanish.
7. Make someone smile every day.
8. Do whatever I can to support those who serve their country and community.
9. Ride from Dallas to Oregon and back on the CVO.

Other than those few things.........I think I'm pretty good to go.
