You guys are lucky in the States. Here in Canada the Prime Minister(our version of the Prez) can stay on forever as long as he gets re-elected every 4 years. At least you KNOW your's is gone after 8.
Yeah Muff, it's hard to argue that. Ever since the 22nd Amendment was passed in 1951 that's the way it's been. Only one President ever varied from George Washington's original example also. And even then one could argue that WWII made FDR's third term and fourth election something of a unique situation. All in all the limitation of leadership terms has worked here.
Granted, it comes from the perspective of an American, but I can't help but grin a bit whenever I hear someone mention the idea that we'd be better off with a Parliamentary system. As well intended as it often is our national legislature is so part and parcel of topical interests that seeing anything other than separate and balanced/competing branches of a government just scares the hell out of me. At least for us down here below the border Madison had it write in Federalist 10. We need to knock heads a bit to keep things moving forward. It's messy, but it works for us.
