New American Iron disects the IDS and the cover up of HD.
« on: February 16, 2008, 01:03:31 PM »

A strong article examining the band aid and possibly the causes of drive train noise being the compensator.

"Harley-Davidson, in order to preserve traditional design, goes to inordinate lenghts to mask symptoms as opposed to curing some problems."

Can anybody scan this article & post it here? Or is there somewhere online to find it?

I've been considering changing to the IDS pulley. I'm waiting to read and hear more about it & the main causes for why we need this.    ???

Thanks Guys...

I'd like to see it also.  I had the IDS installed right before the bike went away for storage.  I haven't ridden it yet with it on.  The article seems a bit harsh given skreminegul07's description.  I got mine as a result of all the rave reviews from this forum.

The article is pretty long, about four pages. Most of the article is spent discussing the multiple theories on what the noise is, where it comes from and why it is there. Without exception, the conclusion is that the IDS successfully removes the whine/clatter/knock that people don't like about the 2007 touring bikes.

Bottom line. Get the IDS. It works. :2vrolijk_21:

I had really regretted the six speed until I installed the IDS.  All of the issues were gone.  I never noticed the gear noise in 5th, but it was like a siren in first.  The huge improvement to me was in the curves, smal roads, it seemed I was always in the wrong gear and constantly shifting.  Now that feeling is completely gone.  It was worth every penny and with the HD promotion, it was installed almost free.

Still ticks me off though that the cheap a-holes at the MoCo are making the '07 customers pay for the "fix" of a problem created by the MoCo's design.  The right thing would have been to offer the IDS free to those with a problem.

As it states in the article, that would provide an admission of guilt and then everyone would want one.

Of course, that would be the right thing to do...  :2vrolijk_21:

You can go to h-d.com and search for Isolated Drive System, or look in the new P&A catalog.

I'm not sure I've read here or anywhere else that HD installed an IDS for customer satisfaction. (FREE)

I doubt you ever will.  They seem to be real big on not setting precedents that might open them up to doing the right thing for others.  When they do in fact buy back defective bikes, they force you to sign a non-disclosure agreement as part of the deal.  They would much rather have their customers believe there is no chance to have their issues addressed, and just fix stuff on their own dime. I'll bet you however that they have in fact installed the IDS free of charge for very influential customers who got ahold of the right executive.

I don't think you ever will hear of the MOCO doing this or anything like this.  At best, you may find a dealer who for sake of future business willing to absorb cost for corrections such as this.  I know of none who have done so specifically for the IDS, but I do know of one who at their own expense paid for something they were in to way obligated to pay for under the terms of a warranty - simply to preserve a relationship.

The MOCO - no, a dealer - maybe...

Let's see a Harley that doesn't leak, doesn't vibrate, handles well, and doesn't make noise, isn't that a Gold Wing! ;)
