Some comparisons FLHXSE3 to FLHTCU
« on: November 11, 2012, 02:09:21 AM »

Hi there

I'd like to say at the outset this is my first CVO 110ci and my first Street Glide. What a combination!
I also have an 09 Electra Glide Ultra Classic (96ci) but have decided to sell it because my missus has developed a chronic lower back problem and on long trips even in the "plush armchair on two wheels" she suffers discomfort.

I've clocked up about 600 k's (~375 miles) so not even run in yet but I'd like to make some observations. I'm not complaining but just stating differences I've noticed. And I'd like to find out if thay are in fact common to the make and model.

1. The engine "shakes" more at idle than the EG. As said its my first SE 100ci bike.

2. On deceleration there is a noticeable vibration through 1500rpm as the bike is coming to a standstill.

3. The suspension is "harder" for want of a better word. Doesn't ride as smoothly over bumpy bitumen as the EG I guess, but its sensational around corners. I realise it's an 1" lower at the rear and doesn't have air shocks like the EG. Tire pressures are spot on.

4. Comfort of the seat?

5. I'm getting more wind buffetting than on the EG which has a standard 10" screen fitted.

Any comments appreciated.

After it's run in I'm planning on upgrading the exhaust system. Choices are a minefield, but I'll do the research the closer I get to it. Leaning towards V&H Dresser Duals and Hi - Outputs.

Cheers

I have only used the stock seat a couple of times, since I wanted a seat with a backrest.  For solo riding I use a Mustang solo seat with a backrest and for two up I use a Sundowner with a backrest.  The stock seat was not that comfortable to me.

The stock windshield is nice for looks but to reduce the wind buffeting you mean to use a higher windshield.  I used a Long Ride Shields 8 inch windshield during the summer which worked well.

I do not really notice the engine shake since my other V-twin motorcycle has a solid mounted S&S 117 cubic inch motor so it really shakes.  More displacement equals more vibration to be transferred to the frame.

Change the seat (stock seat sucks, I went with Corbin), change the shield (stock shield sucks, I went with LRS) and change the suspension (stock suspension sucks, I went with Traxion and Ohlins).  Take it back to the dealer and have them try to figure out why you have a bad vibration problem.  Vibration does vary from bike to bike.  I had an 08 110 that vibrated like crazy and my 12 is not even noticeable.  A good tune helps that a lot, but there are many many factors that can create the problem.

Hi there

Your ride looks awesome. What height are you? And what slip ons do have on the power duals?

I am 5'11".  When I had an Ultra Limited, I had a 10 inch Harley windshield on it and could see over it.  With the slight flip up on the LRS windshield you can go with a shorter windshield and still get the same wind blockage.  I put a 9 inch windshield on for the winter but will go back to the 8 inch windshield in the spring.

I am 5'6" and I do look through the shield. I have hardware in my neck from an earlier break and I can't take any wind buffeting that is why I went with a taller shield.  A 7" shield would have worked if I wanted to look over it.  I'm running the 4" Rineharts with my powerduals and I couldn't be happier.  They really bark when you get on the throttle.  Not obnoxious at all.

In regards to your wife's condition.  Is it any different on the Street Glide?  Reason I ask.  My wife has back issues as well.  Once we got rid of the air shocks on my 05 and went with an aftermarket shock, the ride was much better on her back.

On our 2011 FLHXSE2 she is much more comfortable with what came stock.

Hi there
I haven't been for a ride with her on the back of the Street Glide yet, partly because of circumstance and partly because i want to clock up a few more miles on the bike till I put her on the back.
I'll report back for sure after I do. Currently thinking about changing out the windshield as a matter of priority and then possibly seat and rear shocks. I've got onto a set of catless original equipment headers I'll probably snap up as well.

Hi there

A little further input is needed. I've decided I'll change out the bugs in order of priority, so first things first is the wind buffeting.

Some users have fitted Long Ride Shields as opposed to Freedom Shields. Difference? One better or worse? Or just personal choice?

And the other is the genuine HD Wind Splitter. Just wondering about it as well. I'm going to try and accurately measure where the stock CVO Street Glide screen comes to on my face.

I'm 5'9" in boots and I reckon the top of the screen sits about the middle of my chin.

Also has anyone fitted the chrome front fork baffle that HD sell #58520-79TC. Has it made a difference as well?

Cheers
