Transmission Oil Vent
« on: March 09, 2008, 07:29:05 PM »

Thumper has never done this before.  Just paid a visit to the beer machine.  Glanced over at Thumper's pretty butt, and noticed a single drop of Bel-Ray 85W140 on the floor.  Chased it to the transmission oil vent.  Until this morning, I haven't ridden in almost a month.  On last transmission oil change, I filled to the halfway point between A & F on the dipstick.  Still at that level.  Dry everywhere else.  Shifted excellent this morning.  How common is this?  What causes it?

She's just pissed at you, and spit on the floor to let you know  ;)  Honestly, I have no idea...the only time I've heard of this is when it was slightly overfilled.  I can smell the Pepto Bismol I put in mine on occasion, but never saw it spit on the floor.

You sure Anne Bea didn't puke some of her green beans in there?

That's what I thought.  I left her alone, covered, in the garage............with dirty wheels..........for almost a month, then took her out and flogged her this morning, and she's lettin' me know she ain't havin' no part of it.  How silly of me.......thinkin' I could treat a lady that way.  She sure seemed to enjoy this morning tho'.

I was thinking that's the purpose of the vent and J tube......to vent an overfilled res.  Whatever caused it, she wet burped.  I don't even notice the Bel-Ray stench anymore, but I know its there.  Guess I've gotten used to it.  Dead mouse by the refrigerator compressor fan is a different story.   ;)

Good possibility......but there wasn't any green flecks mixed in the red stuff.   :P

I had my transmission start leaving a few drops here and there, traced it back to too much oil in tranny.  I put on 24 oz which is the high side of the spec.  Now I use between 18 and 20 oz without any overflow.

The only times I ever had trans lube drip from the overflow tube (rather than from the normal sources, mainshaft or shift shaft seals) was back in the days when I would determine the fill level with the dipstick.  That is a very inaccurate method, since the level is dependent on having the bike level and then inserting the unsupported dipstick perfectly straight.  If you don't think that makes a difference, try it.  I can make mine read anywhere from completely off the stick to nearly full just by varying the angle at which I hold the dipstick while inserting it.

The best approach is to make sure you drain the lube when hot so that you get as much as possible out, and then fill based on actual volume.  I've found that staying at the low end of the spec (20-24 oz.) has totally eliminated any mist or drips from the vent.  Still doesn't help the main and shift shaft seals though.  For that I'll probably go with the sawdust fix. ::)

Jerry, Thanks much for the reply.  Last time I serviced the transmission, I put 24 oz of Bel-Ray in the res. just like I always do.  That's what is so puzzling.  This has never happened before, and upon arrival at work this morning, she's dry as a bone outside.  No spitting.  Weirdness.  Guess she really was pissed at me.
