fairing windshield sizes
« on: February 25, 2008, 03:40:41 PM »

I am looking to put a fairing on my roadking.
i am 99% sure i am going to go with the hoppe.
i am not sure what size windshield to get.
my friend has the ultra classic and says his shield measures 12"
what is the height of the SE ultra classic shield?
is the SE Electra glide the same??
how is it riding with the lower shield. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

I have four different size windshields for my SEUC.  The short windshields look sharp and (IMO) are not bad for cruzin around town.  The bike came with a 10", but I was getting too much wind.  I now have a 12" on it that keeps most of the wind off me.

I still put the 6" dark tint on every now and then, for cruzin around town.

The SEEG/2 came w/the Electra Glide® Dark Smoked Wind Deflector 4" which is great for bar hopping/around town riding, but (IMO) doesn't work for touring. I believe the SEUC's came w/the same shields as a stock Ultra (sorry don't know what that height is). The best way to get an idea what shield will work best for you is to sit on bikes with different shields. For long distance riding you'll want one you can see comfortable over sitting in your natural position. You can get by w/a shorter shield if you get one w/the "Euro" lip that deflects wind up a little bit more then a straight shield will.

I have a 12" shield with a GW vent in it, but it lets water through, it is from Clearview.
A 9" clear usful for most and it is from DeadCenter(oem fairing).
A 4" soild black, looks good, don't work for me, from HD
A 9" dark smoke from Clearview on order.  It'll take a couple to find oout what works for you, Good luck

Hi Lou,
Shield height is a personal issue that is affected by things only you can answer. Style vs. protection or height of your torso vs. another person, type of helmet or lack of helmet when riding. Speed you ride and weather extremes etc.
I have ridden street bikes since 1975 and have ridden without a shield, with a short shield and with a taller shield. I found out for myself I would rather ride with no windshield or fairing vs. a short shield. With no fairing or windshield the air is evenly distributed over your body. When you have a small fairing or a short shield the air get's concentrated or focused on various body parts and it also creates low pressure areas so the wind is not even over your body.I found with a short shield that it drove the wind into my face and buffeted my helmet a lot and was very tiring. I had the stock 6" shield on my 2006 FLHTCUSE. I think the stock Ultra comes with a 12" shield.
I learned years ago that if you sit on a bike in a normal riding position and have someone hold a yardstick vertical from the top of the fairing to a point where you just look over without lifting your head that would be the height of windshield you should use. (From the front if you have a person helping you it would appear as a spot at the bottom of your nose as the right height.) This way wind would be channeled over your helmet and not blast you in the face. In the rain,if the shield is messed up you are looking over it. In the cold and in other conditions you could slump down and be protected by the shield.
I have a long torso with short legs and found out that a 14" shield works best for me. I love Clearview's quality and customer service and i also love the recurve (Euro lip) at the top since it gives the effect of a taller shield in directing the wind yet it doesn't have the drawback of entering your constant vision like a taller shield.

Hi I'm 5'9" and can just see over. I got the Hoppe 8" but would have preferred a 6".  When it rains (And it nearly always does) I prefer to see over rather than through.

My five cents: For serious touring you must choose the height which allows you to comfortably see over the shield.

Ride safely,

Absolutely they reckon you should be able to see the ground 50ft in front.  I think that is a little conservative when you take into account stopping distances
