Does SEEG2 need a download?
« on: April 26, 2005, 09:12:16 PM »

After reading all the threads relating to fuel managers I have decided on the HD Race Tuner package. When I stopped at my dealer today to order the RT programmer, parts guy said the tech department didn’t like the RT and said I should talk to the shop. When I did it turns out the parts guy was wrong, shop doesn’t like the Race Fueler (as well as several members of this board) and were ok with the RT (realize that this shop does not have a dyno yet).

During our conversation the service manger told me that my bike (2005 SEEG2) did not need a download for basic mods, including the stage one air cleaner and aftermarket slip on pipes (V&H Oval’s in my case).

Does this sound right? I was under the impression I would need the download for any mods.

He also said if a Power Commander was installed on the bike when they used the HD scanner for work, the system would flag the bike’s vin for warranty issues. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance.

Any mods to the air intake or exhaust will require either a re-map, power commander, race tuner, or other fuel management device. Don't trust what this shop is telling you. I do not know about the power commander flagging warranty issues but you can unplug it and they will never know it was there.

The service guys comment was based on "forgetting" to unplug the PC or while getting stuck on the road.

Porthole:

I can assure you from first hand experience that you must do the download.
The Harley download is specific for the Screamin Eagle slip ons and the Stage One
Air Cleaner set up.
I originally purchased just the Stage One Air Cleaner set up and installed with a set of Samson Ovals I had left over from a 95" FLHT I had built up. Went to dealer and had the download done.  Bike felt lazy/relaxed and not spot on with the throttle. I figured from previous experiences that the Samsons weren't baffled enough to produce the needed back pressure for the download. After installing the Screamin Eagle slip ons the whole personality changed. It now runs like it should and to my taste sounds better.
Anyway, the message for me was if you're not going to Race Tuner or a qualified fuel commander set up by a pro ,use the Harley parts and download. It's a conservative set up but works real well with no check engine lights popping on etc.
If you're a Jersey guy and have a ride going let me know. Once in a while I'm in the Shore area.

Bill

I had rides planned for this weekend, but I am not one starting a ride knowing it is going to rain.

Had the same questions about warranty, got in touch with HD headquarters, and basically it boils down to the dealer.  If your RT can be proved to cause a problem with the motor, you lose, if it doesn't , then your warranty stands.  I would be hard pressed to believe that Harley intended to only sell to out of warranty owners; True Duals, RT, 6 spd gear sets etc.  Only 30% of the new bikes sold leave with out some significant adds.
Most dealers want the extra shop time, they get to charge full book time without a customer bitching about the labor charges.
