GPS locator, coordinates, cross reference etc.
« on: April 15, 2008, 12:10:46 AM »

Is there a web site ( I'm sure there is) that you can put and address on and it will give you the GPS coordinates and vice versa.  You put coordinates in and and it gives you the add. or place.  Thanks.  I'm trying to set up kinda scavenger ride.  I know there's something like the Geo cash....
but I'm not smart enough to figured it out.  Thanks for the read and the help.  Let's Roll

I tried Google earth but for the gps thingy you have to do the pay subscription

You can do it with Google Maps (free version). Put a 'push pin' close to what you are looking for, then pull up the properties of the push pin. In there you can alter the Long/Lat coordinates and move the pin to the location you input. If you are looking for the coordinates of an address, put in the address, put a push pin there and then open the properties.

That sounds easy enough.  What about the reverse, if you have coordinates is there any place you could input them and it would tell you the place.

Don't know about telling you the place, but it could give you close to the street address. I understand what you're trying to do and can't answer that one.

Oh I see.  Yeah, I figure the gps units have to have something like that, but I don't have a gps, yet.  I just can't beleive there isn't something on the internet that you can plug in some coordinates and it tells you where that location is or how to get there. Thanks, Naitram

Go here

http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp

and download this

MapSource  6.13.7  February 27, 2008

That may or may not work without having the GPS, I never tried it without a GPS.

You could also use Microsoft Streets & Trips program.

That program ahas a "location" sensor that will give you Lat & Lon. But, the reading is in decimal of degree, e.g. 40.18745 degrees instead of the conventional 40 01.003 or 40 01 55.

You can also enter a Lat Lon and have it find the location.

Go to http://maps.google.com/ and type the location coordinates in the format <latitude, longitude>. (like 43N 79W will drop you on Grand Island)

To get the exact street address, you can use the driving directions feature of Google Maps - type the address of any known location nearby and click Get Directions.
