110 Engine
« on: April 06, 2008, 05:42:43 PM »

I have had a strange noise comming from my engine-sort of a rattling noise (but not all the time)-last week I noticed oil on my transmission cover.
I took my 07 SERK to the Harley dealer and they replaced the cylinders-installed new rings and a valve job all under waranty.  The service rep. said he  has had to to this on other 110 engines and has not had one call back after they have been repaired.
Just picked up the bike Friday and rode it about 50 miles yesterday and it runs like new and sounds great.  Still have to break in the motor like it was new for the first 500 miles.
When I went to pick up the bike on the bottom of the invoice it said recall 0174/10-07-06.  My understanding is that the  heads were not machined correctly.  Has anyone heard of any recall on the 110 Engine???  They may have made a lot of the 110 Engines-and may only be addressing the ones that are brought in.  My bike has 9000 miles on it-this problem may not show up for a lot of people who do not ride much until after they get some miles on it and probably be out of warranty.  I tryed to check on computer to see if there were any recall on this and could not find anything.

This is the first I have seen about an actual "recall" on the 110"

had 6300 miles on mine when winter hit.  had a very small amount of oil getting into rear cylinder and fouling plug.  only happened once. dealer ordered new head gaskets, and I took it in,in Feb.  picked it up to go to Daytona, they told me while they had it apart,  they decided to replace the top end,  meaning  cylinders, rings, and any gaskets or seals needed. also checked rocker box clearance.   runs fine, and have had no other problems,  hasn't cost me a penny for any of the work,  but nothing was said about any recall.

I was at the dealership yesterday and talked to them about something on the bike and one thing lead to another which got us talking about the two sets of gaskets and now new motor w/2000 miles on it that I've gone thru.  He looked at the motor and noticed some seepage that  I wouldn't have even given a second look.  I mean barely noticeable right at the gasket.  He jumped on it and wants my bike this week and said Moco has told them to replace the Gaskets, cylinders, and O rings on any 110 showing signs of leakage.

He showed me a springer that they just finished with, using the new composite type gasket.  He also told me that they have given it a new 07B number and that they have been stocking them for just this reason.

It just seems a little aggressive from what most of us have gone thru in the past for even worse leaks, but I guess I'll keep you posted later this week to see what comes of it when I bring it in.

I've had the rattling since day 1. Took the bike in after a long road trip (6 months ago) and asked them to be sure and check out the loose marbles flying around in the engine. When I picked up the bike they said there were no unusual noises, so no fix. It still rattles like marbles in a tin can!

I believe that recall # refers to the Torque Smoothing Calibration they did to your bike Ellis. Check your paperwork again. ;)

Howie-you are right that recall Number is for the Torque smoothing calibration-I still believe that something is wrong there are 2 many people with oil leaks.

No question! But it's a business decision on how to deal with it, as long as it doesn't get considered a safety issue. As such, it's cheaper for them to play this silly game and just keep fixing it under w.....ty. And keep saying publicly that there's no problem. Remember, the CVO's are only a very small percentage of the total number they sell. Even if half, or even ALL the CVO's have this problem, it won't impact the majority of their sales. The'll just stop making this motor instead next year, and continue to deal with you guys. Believe me, if half of ALL their new bikes they sell had this problem, this would be fixed in a NY minute!!! We're their Flagship line, but from a business standpoint, they don't seem to give 2 chits about our engines!!! >:(

I just got my '08 back from it's 5000 mile service and one of the things they did was replace the gaskets due to oil leak. Total surprise to me. I've been watching for a leak and I didn't notice anything. The store was busy so I didn't get a chance to speak with the wrench. I'll need to stop by this week and see what's up.

Maybe, just maybe, MoCo is convinced that they have found the solution and have told all the dealers to replace the head gaskets at the next service interval.

WTF am I thinking. They would do that would they?

I'd buy that if they put the 'B' version of the gasket on, however looking at the work order, they put on an old gasket.

These dealers just don't have a clue.  :o >:(
If the MoCo already has obsoleted the 'A' gasket with the 'B' version, why is your dealer still using the old parts?

Did you mention anything to them or did you just want the bike back so you could ride?

I don't know how long it takes for new part numbers to show up in the dealer's systems, or how they get there. When I called to check on the new part number, I was told they had 10 07A's in stock. I then asked about the new part number and it wasn't until they pulled it up on HD.NET that they saw the new number. Maybe they don't want to lose money on old parts in hand and they'll find about the new number when they place a new order.

Maybe someone here has more insight into how their system updates are done, but it doesn't look like it's automatic.
