I had my 10K service done and had the amp flashed. I installed my bass ports yesterday. It is pretty simple and fool proof. I downloaded an app on my droid to measure sound. I placed the phone on the seat before the bass ports were added and noted the radio volume level. 98 DBLs. I did the same after the bass ports and......98DBLS!
So, the advertising stating a gain of 3 DBLS is either not true or the app on my phone is not terribly accurate. As I walked away from the bike with he app running, the DBLs did decrease.
Having said that, the bass ports are still well worth the money and time. I am not sure bass response can be measured with a crappy app, but the HK system sounds a lot better with the ports installed. You can feel the air escaping the ports into the tour pack with your hand near the ports.
Now, onto a helpful fix.....
My tour pack liner does not fit perfectly in the pack and as luck would have it, the liner sat away from the tourpack in the area of the ports due to the bolts to hold the speaker pods onto the tour pack (the same bolts used to hold the templates in place prior to drilling). The rubber o-rings provided with the kit are a joke as far as keeping the ports in place. My left port fell out with just the music playing after 3 minutes and without the bike running.
I reported a few months ago that Velcro sticks incredibly well to the liner material, so I bought 2" strips and used the loop side only as it sticks like glue to the liner. I cut crescent pieces and stuck them to the back of the port face plate. I then stuck two small pieces of the loop to the tour pack itself. So, now the liner sticks to the tour pack near the port holes I drilled and the ports themselves stick to the tour pack liner.
I removed the speakers again this AM and saw that the bass port tubes are even with the inside of the speaker pod and the fit is perfect! If the bass port tubes had extended into the speaker pods, I was going to buy some 2" o-rings and slide then onto the tubes ends inside the speaker pods to hold the ports from the inside. The only problem with this is that any time you removed the liner, you would need to remove the speakers to re install the o-rings on the tubes. The Velcro works!!
I noticed that after the amp flash, the IPOD plays the same song that was on when the bike was turned off, it used to go back to the first song on my playlist every time the bike was started. I am going to Daytona Bike Week in two weekends and I am taking the bike to the HK vendor to see if he can tweak the amp settings and to check that HD did the flash and did it correctly. I'll update the board.
