OK, I am an idiot...
« on: June 20, 2008, 07:46:14 AM »

I bought the Chrome fender extension hoping to cover up the soon to be installed Bushtec hitch...

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448770885&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302287117&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302287117&bmUID=1213962072742&bmLocale=en_US

...only to find out that it would require me to drill two holes in the rear fender....that is where I draw the line...I have installed saddlebag and tourpak spoilers in the past that required drilling plastic...but the steel fender...no way!

I'm pretty sure Chief and a few other have used 3M "auto trim" double sided tape to hold it in place.

Sounds like a solution to me.  "I'm an idiot"-All of resemble that remark at times.

I know others will chime in here but I'm almost positive it has worked well for others.

I don't have any experience with that chrome piece, but I did use the black 3M stuff for my FLHX piece. There are six places of contact on the rear fascia to use the tape, don't know how much contact area there is on the shiny one.

Good luck.

2Lane posted some pictures under a Bushtec thread earlier this week.

Which one specifically? 2lane has pics of the FLHX rear fascia and his hitch. I haven't seen anyone use the chrome fender estension yet with a Bushtec hitch.

Bill, several of us have used the two sided emblem/moulding tape from 3M to hold on the entire FLHX rear fender extension.  That's side covers and tail piece all in one.

That smaller extension from Kuryakyn that Wenchal showed above comes from Kuryakyn with the two sided tape as its only installation method.  Unless this piece you've got is just exceptionally heavy or has only very very little surface/contact area inside the fender I'd not be afraid to try it.

For comparison's sake the FLHX extension has material that sticks up inside the fender for a contact area for the tape that is as high as the visible part that hangs below the fender is low.
