Map reader has GPS questions (mainly 550)
« on: June 04, 2008, 12:38:31 PM »

The Zumo 550 looks like it has been out over a year, when will the next model be out?

What features does the new model need over a 550?

Regarding maps, if I use HD's Ride Planner or Mapquest, they never show the route as I would go.  With the Ride Planner you can drag to a new route.  How hard is it with the 550 to change routes either at home or on the road?

Many thanks, bob

This is one reason I travel with the laptop...to re-program a route the night before.

i find using just the GPS to be very clumsy.

The mapping program that comes w/the Zumo (Mapsource) has the capability of altering (dragging) your route to desired roads. One thing you have to be cautious of is when you do this zoom in close enough so you can make sure where you are placing the new route is exactly where you want it. If not careful you can take the route off/on exit ramps, put it on the wrong side of a divided highway, etc. This will make the route do weird things when it recalculates.

As for a new model coming out and what it will have Garmin is as tight lipped as H-D about what the new models will have, and even more tight lipped about when they will be coming out. With H-D you expect something new in July/Aug each year, but Garmin doesn't have a set timetable like that. Somebody mentioned the other day that they had just purchased themselves a 550 and the way their luck ran the 650 (don't know if that's what a new version would be called purely speculation) would be released shortly.
