I'm guessing I've missed something along the way Chief, but what could the base gasket (O-ring) possibly have to do with fixing the head gasket leak issue?  The old design O-ring has been working fine for about 9 years now, so even though I personally like the idea of the square versus round cross section, I don't see what the big deal is.  And I'm with you, if Harley insists on just continuing to redesign gaskets and doesn't come up with some hard parts, then I'll be forced to believe what I suspected all along; they plan to pull the same chit on the customers that they've gotten away with on the old cam chain tensioners and the various other known defects they never corrected.

It's becoming more and more obvious to me that my next bike will not be a Harley.  I'd rather walk or ride a moped before I would let H-D stick it to me again.  I wonder if they make lowering kits for a beemer so my short legs will reach the ground?

Jerry

Jerry,

I'm with you about the new o-ring. As far as we know there isn't a problem with oil coming up from the case, but for some reason they've redesigned the o-ring. :nixweiss:

I'm just guessing that any parts kits will contain the new rubber parts.

I'm still hoping the new parts are coming in a box and not just an envelope. ;)

Well I guess I jinxed myself after saying 7,200 miles on my Cylinder liner gasket fix and no problems.... I now noticed a leak at the base of both cylinders  :-\  just a weep of oil but a leak none the less at 13,700 miles :o  I'm now a member of the base cylinder leak to :2vrolijk_21: Any one get the letter from MoCo yet ;)

They just don't want it leaking from the cylinder base as it goes down the stud hole, if the HG leak hasn't revealed itself yet. Buys em more time that way. That way you'll only complain about an HG and not just a BG leak! ;)

The o-ring doesn't have anything to do with that leak. The stud holes are OUTSIDE the o-ring, not the INSIDE. If anything, it might keep the leaking oil from getting IN to the crankcase.

Picked up my bike yesterday from the shop. 07 SEUC with 8,100 miles. Had a slight leak on the rear head gasket. The tech wrote on the repair order "Replace Head and Base Gaskets Due To Issues With Screaming Eagle 110 Motors". They replaced all gaskets with the newer type (head, Base and O Ring), replaced the cylinder bolts, honed the cylinders and replaced the rings and installed new valve guides. They also found a crack in the exh. manifold and replaced it. The tech told me he checked everything out and felt this would do it. I guess time will tell. The bike sure does run good, everything seems good. I am real happy I have the ext warranty, I am covered until late 2013. If it happens again, I will just take the bike in and have them fix it. For me, this is a better way then selling the bike and taking a big loss. I like the way the bike runs and looks, I just might need to take her in for repairs now and then. I am hoping for the best. Life is too short to worry.

Was it the guides themselves or the valve seals?  If you had a cracked guide and they caught it it is time to give thanks to the Travel Gods.  A few of the new motors have dropped guides completely and the resultant damage has been extreme sometimes.

My printout from the dealership shows "R&R Head and Base Gaskets Rebuilt Top End Replaced Cylinder Heads Rings Valve Guides Seals & Gaskets & Hone Cylinders" They did not use a coma, I have retyped, just the way it is on my repair order.

They do not show a part for the valve guides on the parts list, just shows this copy under "resolution". If it would be helpful, I could list all the parts used. The tech told me he had done several 110's this way and none had come back. I do trust the guy, I have known him for over 15 years. They found the oil leak on the rear jug during a oil change, I did not know it was happening, the tech is also the one to find my cracked exh. Manifold.

Again, let me know if it would be helpful to post the part numbers used on my repair.

From that description was probably the more expected valve guide seals.  Either way it looks like they were trying to do their thorough best for you.  Hope it holds up under the very long haul :2vrolijk_21: .
