I had an 02 Ultra.  When I bought it, the dealer in Amarillo told me that Harley recommended removing the lowers in warm weather.  I don't remember the owners manual saying anything to that effect on the 02 or my 08.....not to say it's not there, I just don't remember seeing it.

Just good practice to keep that rear cylinder cooler and keep the motor breathing better. 8)

For all those that insist on removing the lowers. If ya haven't tried just removing the doors it is almost like having the lowers off, I tried both ways. No doors also lets the noise out. I may even go the next step and cut the doors so when they are open they truly are, not just half open as designed. Maybe someone will sell me a set they aren't using, or better yet make some from aluminum and CHROME them. Yea right. LOL

If ya just like the look without them I do too, but I like the wind shield effect more, maybe it's the age.

Later,

I agree.  Pulling the lowers off dropped my engine temp by about 30 degrees.  Motor runs stronger as well.  Just a bit chilly in the morning but worth it.  Been thinking about the quick release kit in order to put them on or off quicker?  Has anyone tried that kit yet?

They're off in a couple minutes per side with the standard hardware.  Can the quick release kit really be much quicker?

I took my bug covered lowers off and slung them up on the work bench.

there's so much crap on that bench..there's no way the bugs will ever make it down that far.

It just occured to me that many of you think removing the lowers is like riding around without your saddlebags or something. That H-D intended for them to be on the bike at all times. NOPE, they are an accessory that come as a standard item on the regular production Ultra Classics and the Screamin Eagle model baggers. They were not ever intended to be left on the bike during warm weather riding. Since I don't have an owner's manual for a model that comes standard with lowers, I can't look up the section on them but it would not surprise me if the OM says to take em off if riding in temps above (say 80) on a regular basis.

B B
I don't remember reading anything in my manual suggesting removal in high heat, but in one of the recent Enthusiast rags they suggested opening the vented lowers in high heat or buying a kit for an older non vented model to curb the burn. I ride w/ a few guys who remove them in the summer, but I just don't like the look of it. Its got nothin to do with storage cause I don't use the glove boxes anyway and probably won't til I get locking doors for them. JMO. I'll see how this works and if it doesn't do the trick I'll have to invest in the new HD A/C unit, but I'll wait til the fall to get it at a decent price. :huepfenlol2:
