I've been doing some fuel injection research lately, and what I'm seeing is the oppinons are all over the map!

After a couple weeks of investigation, I'm starting to think that cleaners don't work... and if there is a real need to clean them that they should just be replaced.

Below is what I've had done to mine previously....

dj,
Thanks for your reply. This past summer I noticed my dealer had this new product/service that they were saying that would clean your injectors, intake valves, and ports manufactured by "BG". They were saying that this service would clean all the above-mentioned items and would be sufficient for approximately 10k miles. It was fairly inexpensive ($75) so I opted for this treatment. Below are copies of the brochure that was given to me, also you can refer to this post - Won't be riding this weekend - no warranty for the procedure that was done during the application.

The above link I referred to for the process is from old software so here is that post...
On the topic of carbon build up while at the dealer yesterday to have service done I found out about something that will eliminate some/all of this problem.

Has anyone heard of BG Fuel System Cleaner? This is a three-part procedure that involves the following.

1. They take the breather, and air filter off and spray a solvent in there to break up carbon.

2. They hook a canister up to your bike directly to the fuel line that feeds the injectors (from what I saw it appears they disconnect the fuel feed line from tank and connect this canister/machine there) This machine pressurize the canister to 60psi just like the fuel pump does. The bike is then started and run until the canister empties (since the bike is able to run I'm assuming there has to be some type of fuel mixture in this canister along with a solvent to keep bike running). This is supposed to clean the injectors, valves and top of pistons.

3. They then pour a solvent in your fuel tank that mixes w/gas (I would guess this is similar to injector cleaners that you can buy for your auto) and continues the process of cleaning.

I was told this process would be good for about 10,000 miles, and the cost was $75.00. Service Manager also stated that this product could (by process of cleaning up fuel delivery system) increase my miles per gallon.

I've enclosed a picture of the brochure below. Has anyone heard about this?

I wasn't/don't record my MPG so don't know if it made a difference there, and other then visually inspecting the injectors, intake, pistons before/after (which I didn't) I can't say. Did it make me feel warm and fuzzy because I was at least being proactive.... yes it did. ;D

Here is a product that I've used in my truck - Sea Foam Motor Treatment. Have never used it in my bike, but Sean (Florida Marine) talks about using it in his SERK here.

OK - so not sure if it was the Sea Foam, residual old gas (it sat for a year with STABL) or the BP that I filled up with last fill.  Last week I was having surging and rough idle - filled up with Exxon on Thursday and I have what feels like a new bike.

I was going to start a thread about your CVO's favorite flavor of gas - my SERK appears to like Exxon...  Since I have only run three tanks through it since I've owned it - its hard to get a real feel for it...

My F-150 is like this, it likes Shell...to the exclusion of most other brands and pings like a monster with anything else.

OR the Sea Foam knocked out the crud and varnish and that was in suspension making the bike run like crap...and now since I am in the tank after the Sea Foam?

Some folks swear by it.  I usually run Lucas every other fill in my KLR - keeps me/it happy.   :P

My parents/mom now own this monster motor home - 40 some odd feet...gets like gallons to the mile, so every bit of extra they could get helped...and dad swore by this also.

Most of the fuel cleaners I have used on car engines have said not to be used on air cooled engines.
Probably causing to high of temps when cleaning  :nixweiss:  ??

I have used a product from Chevron called Techron which is recommended by several auto manufacturers but haven't used anything on the bikes.

naitram,  most injector cleaners won't help a clogged injector, but if an engine is sluggish or just a little preventive
maintenance 3-4 oz. of bg44k works wonders. but one must remember that cleaners work in to deposits when the engine
is off, so adding injector cleaner before a long trip will have no resalts.  not just mho, it really does work   axil

Axil,
What's your thoughts on the BG treatment I mentioned above?

The sea foam product seems to work well. We sell it at the store on a regular basis to fleets.

Since I used it, my SERK has become noticeably smoother at idle and the 2-3k surge I was having has disappeared...

When it was IN the bike ran like CHIT.
