SERT Issue
« on: July 05, 2008, 10:27:52 PM »

Hello all,

Need to check the map that is currently in the PCM in my 07 FXDSE . I do not want to mess it up or modify at this time, just want to hook up the laptop to the bike and look at the current map. Do I hook up to the on-board computer, and it will just bring up the current map? I cant find any real answers in the tutorial with the SERT on how to do this and not delete or change the current map at this time. I want to see what is in the bike now, that was put in by the dealer when I picked up the bike, with high flow filter and V&H Bigshots. Will it upload the current map, and then it will need to be reloaded to the PCM after I look at it? Not a dummy, just want to make sure I dont hose up the bike PCM. Have looked over the SERT program pretty well and understand it, just doesnt explain this very well.

You can't actually look at the map that is loaded in the ECM (PCM).  You can however read the current part number of the map that is installed.  This may or may not be helpfull, here's why..... The part number (Cal number) will tell what map was used as a base map and as long as no changes were made to the base map before it was loaded, you can then open the map and see what is loaded.  If the map was changed and then loaded in the ECM it will still display the same cal number and you not be able to tell what, if anything, was changed.

If you have the SERT you can hook it up and view the ECM information and that will tell you the cal number and will not change anything in the ECM.  To do this, open the SERT program and then open any map.  After the map is open, goto "File" and then to "Program ECM".  Make sure the com port is selected to the proper port and then click the "Get ECM Info" button.  This will return the VIN, ECM part # and the Cal ID.  Then you can look up the Cal ID and see what was used as the base map.   This has virtually no risk of changing what is in the ECM as long as you DO NOT hit the "Program ECM Cal" button.

Thanks Springer, I appreciate the info. I was afraid of not being able to see edited data on the originally installed map. Well, I am going to work on this today.
