Insurance on a Custom
« on: July 09, 2008, 08:47:06 PM »

Have a bud who is having trouble getting insurance for his chopper. Geico (and others) told him they would not insure the custom bike. He built it from parts has about 18k into it, and even Progressive will only give him liability. Anyone have any experience with this?

Geico is insuring my wife's Honda Valkyrie trike which has custom paint body work and special every thing she could think of. I think with a little work and going in to talk to a representative he could get hooked up. He wants to document every thing for future reference having them sign it all. She did have a accident and a deferant insurer wanted to only pay for 3 colors. She had in writing that they would cover custom paint so she had them, but it was a fight. I don't remember the name of that insurance compony but it was like A1 or Guardian.

It's a huge fight to get them insured up here as well.

Under the insurance act it is maditory to have insurance in Ontario, so the goverment has ordered insurance companies not to deny anyone.

The way around it for the company is to put the custom on a facility policy... thats were an owner has to put up a cash bond... average is between 10 and 25k!

They're not a licensed manufacturer?  The bike didn't come with a title?

They're a licensed manufacturer then.  You got a title or MSO for the bike itself.

Customs (home brewed) are what are a real PitA to get insured anymore.

ooops, minor spewage  :huepfenlol2:

Still hate it everytime I think about how poorly that bike handled for you.  It should have been a fun fun ride.  Always unfortunate when a good bike isn't quite all it should be.

There is a big difference between a "customized" bike made by a manufacturer that has met EPA and safety inspections etc. Versus a homebuilt total custom bike that an individual or small shop made from scratch.
State department of motor vehicles are concerned that the fully hand built bike may be made up of stolen parts and the insurance companies worry about coverage of a bike that may be made up of substandard parts, faulty design or assembly. You also have the issue of handbuilt one of custom parts, how do you assign a replacement value to the part?
