Head recall
« on: August 17, 2008, 12:37:41 AM »

Received my recall letter today for ( a no cost upgrade) product program 0905 which includes top end gaskets, center crankcase bolts, ACR and cylinder heads with the new valve guides. My question is since my bike has been
SERTuned on the dyno, will it need to be retuned and at whose expense?

There's a couple of threads here that talk about that. General consensus it that the heads are about the same so you should be alright. Now watch someone tear my head off  ;D. I see that you've been here since '07. Please list your VIN in the registry (see the link in my signature) and let us know of any problems you may have encountered along the way.

I just got my letter and have the same concerns.  If they have to take the heads off I'm thinking to have them polished and ported.  Would this make a difference to the sert mapping?   :confused5:

Most people, including my dealer, will say that no re-tune is necessary. I can say that in my experience the bike runs just as fine as before the "campaign". It was originally DynoJet tuned using a Power Commander III.

If you are having the heads ported absolutely you will want to re do your SERT program on your ECM.

If you are porting the new heads I'd look at upgrading the cams too and possibly the throttle body as well while they are doing the "product improvement"

Are the items they are talking about on the "upgrade" responsible for the lifter noise I'm hearing?

Don't think so but would be nice to quiet it down.

My bike has "905" work done.  No change to the lifter noise from the engine.  I was lucky and my bike seems to be tuned ok... It never ran especially hot compared to other 96" ultras I've ridden.  It seems to be the same now so I will still not tune until I find a set of pipes that I can hear and confirm I like before I buy.

I along with many other CVO owners, received 0905.
I have my bike scheduled for service Tuesday 8/26/08.
If anyone has any good or bad experiences please let us know so we can pass onto our fellow CVO members.
I am at 4996 miles, and have no leaks as of today!
Should I consider any other upgrades with this work?
All that I have done performance wise is add the Arlen Ness Big Sucker Stage one and am happy with what it gave me in H.P. and Torque.

I personally think it's an awesome time to do upgrades so that was the path I went.

I'm having the heads CNC ported then brought back to the dealer.  I'm also upgrading to the SE-251 cam, going with the 50mm throttle body (also ported), D&D Fat Cat 2-1 exhaust, and the SE adjustable pushrods.

It means you've joined the rest of the Power Junkies here on CVOHARLEY.COM!   :D

Seriously, the path the fuel air mixture takes after it leaves the throttle body and through the heads down into the valves and into the combustion chamber is a mass produced piece.  The material can be smoothed (polished) to increase the velocity of the fuel/air mix which get's it in fast and with a little more turbulence which causes better combustion (power).  The porting part is specifically at the valves.

Simplified answer, but hope it helps.
