Motor quits
« on: July 23, 2008, 11:59:34 PM »

Hi all, have had my bike for a little over a year, 3200 miles base gasket leak, dealer fixed and no more problems, till now. After riding 200 plus miles (sometimes after 300) the engine dies when I pull in the clutch If i am quick i can feed it some gas and keep it running. If it dies it will start up immediately, but i may have to manually keep the revs up Leave it for a couple of hours and all is fine. Took it to the dealer who could not duplicate the problem he told me it is probably a lean condition but unless they get it to do it on a test ride they have no idea what to do.  So I took the next step and put on the true dual Reinharts and SERT and had it dynoed problem (really smoothed out the engine, but a little loud) the problem is still there just not as often. anybody got an idea where else to look?
  examples
pull into a gas station fill up and restart bike have to manually keep the revs up over 1100 or motor dies, will continue at stop signs but runs fine as soon as I can speed up.

Going up hill at about 80 in sixth gear see a land mark site so i turn in pull in the clutch and motor dies while trying to downshift restart keep the revs up and can shift down but still will not idle on its own

Thanks Mike

I see you are in WA. Can altitude be playing a roll? I had a similar problem coming off the mountains in Maggie Valley.

Hi I do not think its altitude, but it may be, on a trip to the coast the week prior to changing the pipes Went up mount saint Helen's with no problems but when i got to Astoria Oregon and headed north on 101 I could not use 5th or 6th gear below 3000 rpm or the bike would shake very badly. 1st thru 4th were very smooth. the next morning was the same until the GPS took me dirt rodeoing in search of Neah Bay, after 8 miles of gravel dirt and big pot holes I turned around and went back on the pavement the bike behaved normally again except for dying when trying to downshift.
Thanks
Mike

Sounds alot like what I just went through-send a PM to Springer he may have an idea. I ended up with a different map and haven't seen the dyno yet and the bike runs 100% better now/
