Rear Jug Soot
« on: August 21, 2008, 01:36:18 PM »

Forgive my ignorance, but I am not a gear head.  I had the gasket upgrade at 4,500 miles as a result of a leak and due to engine paint issues, I have a new motor waiting to be put in.  But yesterday while cleaning the bike, I notice the rear jug exhaust pipe had a lot of soot, no so much for the front, is this normal???

The leak doesn't always go outside only.  Check the plugs and see if the rear one looks like it's had oil on it.

Exhaust carbon leak is common if the exhaust gasket wasn't sealed properly or if the exhaust flange is/was loose and or not torpued right?, or the exhaust gasket was defective? How much carbon buildup was present? I think most engines will leak slightly and you will notice it more on a silver painted heads then on the black.
