I just wish people would quit calling these things "warranties".  They are extended service agreements.  You pay your money up front for repairs you may or may not need in the future.  If you don't need repairs, the money is wasted.  If you need repairs that total less than the price of the agreement, the difference is once again wasted.  If you hit the jackpot and need a new engine, you come out ahead.  The entire thing is a form of gambling, and you need to ask yourself "Do you feel lucky?".

BTW, normally an ESP is a great deal for the seller and a lousy deal for the actual customers.  In case you've ever wondered why everyone tries to sell you an ESP these days, even on a cheap $20 watch, it's because those agreements are a gold mine for the sellers.  Normally you would be money ahead to say no thanks, but with Harley's lack of quality and reliability I've changed my opinion.  Of course, if I were looking to buy one myself I think I would look for something from an independent company rather than reward the MoCo for their chitty quality.

Now that chit was funny!  But True Very True.

Ultrafxr and I have this member of our group that has the same bike that he bought new in 01 with a 7 year extended warranty / Service Contract and the dealership has literally rebuilt this bike several times. It wasn't because of defects it is because this guy has rode the wheels off this bike. It recently was about to run out of coverage and he renewed for a few more years and has already recovered his cost of the new coverage with his last trip to the service dept. So is the coverage worth it? I guess it depends how hard  and often you ride. Also a lot of luck goes a long way. Maybe you will hear from him. He is new to the site.

this is my first post i had a long reponse to the subjust ,but it got erased when i posted it...guess i'm not familiar with the equipment......but suffice it to say that IMHO, a esp is worth every penny if you plan to keep the bike for a while...like RK2000 said, i bought my 01' serg brand new and have probably had over $10,000.00 worth of repairs on it that the esp paid for ..now ,granted, i'm not your typical geezer glider rider. i have done ecompitision riding with this bike for over 4 years and ride my screamer like a dirt bike ,so i am pretty rough on the equipment....getting ready for sturgis this year my mechanic called my up with the news that he had the last three inches od my swing arm in his hand where it had broken off on both sides...said i litterally roes the wheels off!! esp paid over $1000.00 just for that..so needless to say, i am a fan of esp :2vrolijk_21:

I've been riding baggers for about ten years and this is my third one.  I've had the extended warranty (different from an extended service plan) on all three and on all three the extended warranty has paid for itself several times over.

If you're riding a bagger and ever have electrical problems.....that alone could cover the cost of the warranty.  Motor and tranny are another issue that will quickly cover the cost of the warranty.  Tires........easily......... :nixweiss:

In most things I agree an ESP is a waste.  Especially on electronics like TVs and Audio equipment.  Those things usally will fail in the first month of they're going to fail. For the few that don't if you add up the cost of the ESP for all that stuff and put it aside you could by your own replacement and have money in the bank leftover.

However,  with the bikes and the cars it's peice of mind.  I always get an ESP for the length of my payment.  This way I don't have to worry about being stuck with an outragous repair bill on a bike that I can't get rid of.  I do ride the wheels off of them.  And the HD plan is unlimited mileage.  If I keep my current average I'll have over 150,000 miles on my bike when my 7 years of payments are up.  It's not unreasonable to assume a major drive line componant and probably a radio or CB module.   If any of those would happen my 1800 ESP will have payed for itself.  And if nothing goes wrong?  $220 a year for peice of mind.  I spend more then that on chrome!

Ride Safe,

JC, please expand on that statement.  I'm totally unfamiliar with a true "extended warranty" that you can purchase.  A true extended warranty would be something like when H-D extended the coverage on the '99 cam bearings to 5 years and 50,000 miles free of charge.  Even H-D does not call their regular offering an extended warranty, they call it an Extended Service Plan (ESP).   http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/HDFS/esp.jsp?locale=en_US
