There was only one way out of there...on a comfortable, heated seat.  Actually, last year I traded an '06 that was about a year old and also decked out on the accessories.  This time around, I knew exactly what bike I wanted and this one should be a keeper for a while.  Had I just gone for any Ultra a few bikes back, I would have been happy and by now I'd have one decked out Ultra.  As it was, I decided that if not now, someday I was still going to lose lots on that bike and I might as well get it out of the way now and move on to the bike I wanted.  Unfortunately, I don't have the garage space to keep both in a practical manner (see photo).  After I traded it, my frequent riding buddy and the guy that was with me when I took the plunge, decided that evening that he wanted to trade his SE Road King for my old bike.  He was smart enough to say no when the dealer tried to put the screws to him on his trade.

This has become an interesting thread. Assuming the reason the key will not work is because the ignition switch is different? If so, how could a locksmith cut the key to work. Just wondering.

A shout out to fellow South Dakotan Steve G! I'm originally from Yankton and finally, after 27 years of "wanting to" I finally bought a HD and made it out to Sturgis this year! "Time of your life.. eh kid?"

The reason it doesn't work is because they only make them to work in the US and Canada.  All other countries the key "is intended for decoration only".  He is not in the US or Canada.  He is in Australia.

Got that part but is there a physical difference in the key tumbler on the bike because of foreign production? If so, I wouldn't think a locksmith would be able to alter the key to work.

I guess that's one to ask Kinka1.  If the key is uncut,  I guess it just needs cut to fit.  If it's cut, but all the same in these other countries, it may not be possible to recut that key to work in anything.  I personally don't know why anyone would care if the key worked or not.  You have 2 of them attached to FOB's and don't you still need the FOB to start the bike anyway?  To me, it's just an extra key to carry around when you already have one in your pocket.  It's bad enough that they didn't include the trunk/saddlebag remote into the unit also, so now you have to carry to FOB's.  Mine is for display purposes only or maybe I can wear it to HOG meetings as a necklace.  Actually, mine will just sit in the original box forever and hopefully I will remember where it is when I trade the bike in someday.  In a real pinch, I guess I have an extra key available.   I would rather they did away with this key and spent the money on upgrading the NAV system.  I think Kinka1's concern was that he thought that he had the wrong key and that someone else might have the key to his bike.

Back in the '60, Lincoln (FoMoCo) made a very big deal about their key. The salesmen used it as a selling tool. The key is one item that you always have in your pocket as a reminder of the vehicle even when you not with it. If the key looks important and feels important, the psychological effect is that your money was well spent on a premium product.

My '07 Road King Classic was only 1 year 3 months old when I traded it.  I only got $17,000 for the trade, which sounds fine until you know that I had about $32,000 into it.  Here's a photo...it was one sweet bike and I will miss it.

That is one sweet Road King....

I think the SE Ultra looks pretty good out of the box and I'm sure I'll be able to personalize it also.  I wonder how it would look with some big ape hangers.  NOT!

No idea if mine fits or not.  Never tried it.  It's on display in one of Renea's knock-knack curios somewhere around here with all the other Harley stuff she has.

I would assume the key is a blank and if you take it and your original to the locksmith he may be able to do something.
It's not something at the top of my list and if i remember i will have a chat to the locksmith down the road tomorrow

I have allways been told do not assume anything as it means it will make an ASS of U and ME  and on both occasions it is right again

The ignition switch is not diferent

The key is not a blank and will be difficult to cut but not impossible, they would need to have the bike and would cut and make the key work.
I did not bother to ask how much. What the dealer said (about 2 years ago) was not totaly wrong but as said before "things wern't made to be easy"

Actually, you don't need the FOB to start your bike.  If you forget the fob and turn the ignition, the alarm will go off and the electronics disabled, unless you do the manual disarm of the alarm.  There should two plastic coated cards in the back of your owners manual and you can punch one, or both of them out and put one in your wallet.  It tells you on there how to manually disable the alarm module so you can start the bike, using the turnsignal buttons.  You'll have to put a code in, but you can disable the alarm and start the bike that way without the fob.
