When is a CVO not a CVO
« on: October 05, 2008, 10:44:08 AM »

Is there a point at which modifications to a stock CVO make the bike something other than a CVO?

The first owner of my bike upgraded the motor from an 88 to a SE 95. Had he installed a Jim's motor, would that changed the CVO status in your mind?

The second owner upgraded the wheels to HD Thudnerstars, changed the bars and speedo and added even more chrome.

I would be interested in hearing your views on how stock a bike must be kept to remain true to the original intent.

Hogbreath put a Jims 120 in his 07 Cuse. It is not a CVO anymore. :P

To my mind it's VIN and paint and original displacement or greater.  CVO VIN and CVO paint and it's always a CVO.  Don't have stuck in some smaller engine after a failure.  Obviously the answer as per title is just the VIN.  But I'd "feel" all CVO-ish if the numbers were right, it looked right and the engine was correct displacement or even more.  Everything else is just a tweak.  Other's views may vary.

I say if it was a CVO when purchased, it's still a CVO now, just a personalized CVO. :drink:

I'm actually happier with it after each mod so that makes it a better bike for me personally.

Realizing the first CVO's weren't Screamin' Eagles and now the two terms are almost synonymous. Would assume they would have put a SE 110 in this bike if that motor had been around then but some of the non HD mods would probably result in derision.

Just trying to stir the pot here.

I concur with Dr. TwoLane! A veritable legend in his own mind! :huepfenlol2:

Seriously if the VIN supports the CVO designation the MOCO seems to agree. Try buying a CVO part with a vin that is not in the run.

CVO VIN and CVO paint and it's always a CVO.

So if it looks like a CVO then maybe it is.
Only way to tell is to check the Vin.
If the paint isn't CVO and the owner says it's a CVO then check the Vin.
So bottom line is, check the Vin.

When you go to sell, if the Vin says it's a CVO then the value will be greater than if the Vin shows it isn't a CVO.

But as the man says,

Who cares, if you're happy with it.

My guess would be that if the vin say's it's a CVO then thats what it is. I took the factory tins off at less than 500miles and replaced them with a custom paint job so in years to come if I sell it the next guy can put it back to stock with a near new set of tins, I have also added chrome along with a Sundowner seat but it's still a CVO Fatboy. After all who would want to turn up at a rally and see another bike that looks just like yours.

When the bike was produced a CVO it has a CVO VIN. You can do anything you want to the bike, it will always be a CVO. Or at least the frame motor and trannie will.
