Road Tar Catastrophe
« on: September 19, 2008, 03:31:27 PM »

Ended up unintentionally (no signs, heavy traffic) riding on a freshly oiled road yesterday on my 2008 CVO Springer 105th anniversary edition. Complete mess. Tar and aggregate everywhere; baked into the fins and completely coating the underside of the bike. After about five hours with a tooth brush ended up going to the auto supply store for more cleaner wax. Found Turtle Wax Bug and Tar Remover. This stuff is a life saver. If you ever have a tar issue you have to try it. Highly recommended!

I use Kerosene, just spray it with a cheap plastic spray bottle on to a cold motor and work it in with a paint brush. Its cheap and works well, so then you can sit back and relax with a couple of rum's. :drink:

Kerosene works well if you have it around, otherwise mineral spirits also works well.  Of course, this stuff will also remove any wax you may have had on the bike.  I usually use the mineral spirits followed by a thorough soap and water wash and then rewax.  The stuff on the bottom of the engine tends to be the toughest to get really clean, but fortunately I'm no longer anal about stuff like that.

If you use kerosene or mineral spirits, make certain to protect your hands and by all means make sure you have excellent ventilation.

Good point... and don't stick the rags you've been using to clean in your pocket and go riding either.

Got the bike cleaned up pretty well. Actually looks better then when I drove it off the showroom floor. Only thing left is the inside of the fenders. Any advice other than pulling the rear wheel and front fender?

Believe it or not--------WD-40  works as well as anything you can buy for a host of different cleanup problems like that. Its uses are well documented and its base is fish oil. Will not hurt paint and cleans up easily with washing after your done with all the tar. I use it all the time on my auto and bike as my state has a habit of doing the tar and gravel treatment on highways here annually.

TAR and CHIP ROAD RESURFACING!!!!! Man that sucks. They are doing that around here. They are trying to save a ton of money. I found the first one in the area by accident. Lucky for mee it had already been rolled and cars had beat it down pretty good. You sill have the lose gravel though.
