Another spec done gone
« on: September 19, 2008, 06:28:51 PM »

After my Rider's Edge class today I visited with a master tech (not Brian Rose) that was doing a 0905 program to a 110 seuc and I asked him what they are doing about cylinders with liner movement.  He said the moco's position is that there is no spec on the slippage and they are not replacing any cylinders that the new 'B' head gasket will prevent any leakage even if the liner has moved.  What do you guys think about this - all except Hoist that is.  I know he'll say FTP (the program).  Should I insist (even if I have to pay) for new rings since the cylinders will have to be removed to install the new square base gaskets?

What's your mileage, Jerry?  If you are 20,000 plus, it would be worth having your cylinders honed and new rings installed.  If your mileage is not that great, your rings most likely would be fine.

Me personally, I would replace the rings and hone the cylinders, regardless of the mileage...  But that's just me being overly cautious.

Almost 19k on this new motor.  That is my thinking also.  I'll check with the svc mgr before I take it in.  Thanks.

Remember that the pistons are removed with the jugs if done correctely so honing/rings are not absolutly necessary, but I have to agree with Sadunbar. Should have done mine with the "fix" as I too was at 20k but I was leaving on a 2700 mi trip the day after pick up and towing a trailer, so no time for break in.

Jerry,

Everytime mine has been torn down I have put in new rings / honed the cylinders.  Like Scott rather be safe than sorry.   I even did this on my own nickel the first 2 times.

If the tech doing the work is any good, you do not have to replace the rings. If the tech is any good the pistons will never leave the cylinders. If the pistons never leave the cylinders then you never need to change the rings!!!!!

So that is the bottom line.

Also if you are having the top end work done, you may want to pick up the costs and replace both the cylinders and pistons. New rings will come with the pistons.

That is about the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard, and obviously came from the same non-engineering asshole at Harley as the flexible specs for crank runout.  I suppose as long as the crank doesn't actually knock a hole in the cases, or the liner doesn't fall completely into the cases, everything is just lovely.

I've got the permanent fix for the leak, btw.  Plug the drain holes, cross drill new holes in the heads from the outside, screw in a fitting, install a return line, and run it directly back to the oil tank.  That way it will bypass the scavenge side of the oil pump, which will also reduce sumping and blowby as the wobbly crank wears out the pump.  Don't use Harley fittings or lines, however, or you may be just moving the leak from one place to another.

To paraphrase Hoist, FTMOCO!

I had the head recall done a few weeks ago. MOCO told my dealer the liner spec is 006. My rear had moved .0045. The dealer now to send back all parts that are replaced on these engines so the dealers cannot judge on anything. I had a knocking noise between 2500-3300 rpms that was not normal to me or the dealer. MOCO said the knocking is normal and caused by the short pistons they are using in these motors. Needless to say I wanted newpistons and cylinders. MOCO said no new pistons or Cylinders to the dealer because they were within specs. I ended up calling Customer Service myself and discussing the matter with them. After a very long discussion they replaced the pistons and clyinders with the understanding it is only for customer satisfaction and the noise would probably not change because it is normal on these engines. Guess what, after 2000 miles the noise is gone and everything is great. So there is a spec and it is .006

I thought there was/should be.  Don't know where the master tech I spoke to got his info but I would venture to guess it was from a call to tech services discussing the need to replace a cylinder with liner movement.  It would be nice if the moco would stay and message and give everyone the same info AND stick to their specs and not keep moving them down the line in their favor.
