After my Rider's Edge class today I visited with a master tech (not Brian Rose) that was doing a 0905 program to a 110 secu and I asked him what they are doing about cylinders with liner movement. He said the moco's position is that there is no spec on the slippage and they are not replacing any cylinders that the new 'B' head gasket will prevent any leakage even if the liner has moved. What do you guys think about this - all except Hoist that is. I know he'll say FTP (the program). Should I insist (even if I have to pay) for new rings since the cylinders will have to be removed to install the new square base gaskets?
That is about the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard, and obviously came from the same non-engineering asshole at Harley as the flexible specs for crank runout. I suppose as long as the crank doesn't actually knock a hole in the cases, or the liner doesn't fall completely into the cases, everything is just lovely.
I've got the permanent fix for the leak, btw. Plug the drain holes, cross drill new holes in the heads from the outside, screw in a fitting, install a return line, and run it directly back to the oil tank. That way it will bypass the scavenge side of the oil pump, which will also reduce sumping and blowby as the wobbly crank wears out the pump. Don't use Harley fittings or lines, however, or you may be just moving the leak from one place to another.
To paraphrase Hoist, FTMOCO!
