question about 20w50 oil in chevy v8
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:50:35 PM »

During an oil change in my Chevy truck today I accidentally added 4 quarts of 20w50 instead of 5w30.  I'm using amsoil so I wondering if I should drain or leave it alone . Thanks!

I think I read where Chevy recommends no more than 30W oil due to tighter tolerances, but I think with Amsoil, you won't have a problem.

Bit the bullet and drained, I'll stay with quarts next time, they have different colors on them, thanks!

I've been reading about using lower multi-viscosity synthetic oils as a way of reducing friction from the oil weight and realizing cost savings in fuel efficiency. ie: 10w30 vice 20w50

Comments anyone ?

butt ugly yes, but I've always prided myself on not having foot odor.

Come on Don, God is merciful, how many faults do you think he gives any one person ?

Y'know what Brian, we've both put bikes down on the highway and came out the other side.  That we're both ugly is little stuff compared to the rest of it :drink: .

It's true Brian, and that's why the manufacturer's went from 10w40 years ago to 5w30, then 5w20.  You aren't talking big mileage improvements, but you have to realize that each tenth of a mile per gallon makes a huge difference when you are trying to meet a corporate average fuel economy regulation and people don't want to buy little cars with little engines.  One tenth of a mpg times 6 million vehicles starts to add up.

In the real world, I stick with 5w30 rather than the recommended 5w20 in Momma's vehicle.  That V-6 runs fairly hot, and I prefer a little better high temp protection over a tenth of an mpg.  JMHO

New Toyotas...5w20 in "normal" climates (cool to cold), and 5w30 down here where it's hotter than hell 3 months a year, and rarely gets below 30 degrees.

The new bike says 10w40, even though it's an A/C twin.  I did switch to Amzoil though.

At the price of the Amsoil I would have left it in till the next oil change.

I think the cost of vehicle ownership plays a bit here and one of the reasons for the downgrade in viscosity requirements.
As mentioned overall fuel economy is the main reason, not because engines run better and last longer running lightweight oil.

Same as the maintenance schedule changes. Recommended maintenance schedule of 7500 on the oil and 15000 on the filter was economics, not engine survival.

Learning some phrases, B B.

Think I'll switch to Mobil 1 next change...their 10w40MTX did great in the Duc.

Toyota was 3K until a couple of years ago, now 5K.  Subaru I had was 7500K.  5K makes all the service intervals easier to keep up with...no need for 3K intervals any longer, IMO.

I was thinking the same thing, however I am running the bypass filter system and go a year on the same oil (1yr or 25K).
I guess chalk it up to a lesson learned.

Thanks and ride safe!
