I was told by the SC Highway Patrol that the requirements of the state the vehicle is registered in are all you have to adhere to as far as equipment on the vehicle is concerned. I know in SC you don't have to have plates on trailers. I have trailered my bikes all up and down the east coast and as far west as SD. I have also pulled my American Legend trailer from Florida to Canada in the east and to SD in the west. No tag! Never Stopped!
I was stopped in VA with a radar detector mounted permanently to the dash and beat that one. ;D
It would probably be a hassle , but I think you could beat the ticket.( may be easier to change the mount )
But what do I know? :nixweiss:

That has always been my understanding.

With that said I have been told by LEO that a vehicle must comply with the state that it is operating in. This is confusing as lifted trucks are a no-no in PA however I recall back in the day several Florida taggged trucks running around PA. Same goes for window tint. No limo tint allowed in PA however Florida has them so black they look painted. Does this mean a Florida vehicle is subject to traffic stops in PA when travelling through? Interesting topic.

Florida is a $1,000.00 ticket yep that's right $1,000.00 for the first offense and $2,500.00 for the second offense. We learned this through a traffic stop in Daytona a few weeks ago (headlight wasn't on!). The LEO gave us the heads up on the tag and sent us on our way after writing the headlight ticket. This is what we did for the rest of the event.

We actually had someone go to one of our dealers at the Racetrack that was from out of state and they got a $1500 first offense fine!  And the third offense for this is $5000 and jail time!  Guess that must be the biggest crime in Florida lately.  Murders and drugs crimes must really be down!?!?!?!?!?

Also that's gonna be a hard law to make stick.  There are cars and trucks from FLA in NY all the time.  These vehicles have the windows tinted almost black!  Well by NY law that illegal!  But since the vehicle is registered in FLA, they are ok to operate in NY with no hassels. HMMMMMM, looks like the old 3 wheeler and jet ski days when people were having too much fun and the GOV has to step in and regulate!

This topic has me thinking and searching for answers.

I have been pulled over in other states for my ape hangers. PA has no bar height so I run 18" apes on 3" risers, they are tall. Florida has a bar height law as I have been stopped for it (thinking back). I would have to say that one would have to adhere to the states requirements that they are in. I say that solely based on helmet laws, PA doesn't have a helmet law however NJ will pull me over before I make it to the first exit without one. Is that the same or different than vehicle requirements?

Helmets are not part of the vehicle equipment, as they are not permanently attached to the vehicle.

Again, I mention the Nightster. I have read that the FL law states the the tag has to be mounted to the fender. Doing a search, I can not find the official law, if anyone know where to find it please post it. However, the Noghtster has it's tag mounted on the swingarm and not the fender. I know that the motorcycle has to comply with Federal law. It reminds me of the 1967 Shelby that had to have the inner headlights changed to comply with Federal law.

This was posted on another forum.

You will find that in nearly every state in this union that your vehicle must conform to the laws and regulations of the state you visit. Some communities sponsoring events will ignore infractions in the face of the revenue made during that event...others will pad the community funds with as many fines as they can collect.

And...ignorance of the law is no excuse.

My understanding is the vechicle has to comply with the laws of the state it is regisered in.

I just beat a ticket for Window Tint in MS, becuase I could prove my truck met TN laws, and that is where it is registered.

States all have different laws on handle bar height and such.  Again I think it goes to the state the bike is tagged in.

In Cali the vehicle code states that the letters on the plates must be horizontal. Many, many customs here have them vertical. The law is not realy enforced but it just give them reason to pull you over..................

Well, here's one. I know some have lights under their tanks etc. Some may even be blue in color. ANY vehicle displaying blue lights while driving on a public road in SC will be pulled over. A lot of this is officer's discretion.

True!  But states like MD, PA and DE have passed laws that any aftermarkert lighting (LED accent lighting) is legal to run on a motorcycle as long as it is not flashing or strobing.  It wont be to much longer before some more states get the pressure to pass they same law.  There was enough lobbying for the safety in being able to see us on the road and I guess they got tired of hearing about how the little old lady in the oversized Lincoln didnt see the motorcycle.
