dragon wings, freedom wings or HD deflectors?
« on: November 10, 2008, 06:11:46 PM »

I am thinking about buying some adjustable wind deflectors for my NANA. Would love to hear pros and cons about all brands. Pic's of dark tinted preferred.

Thanks

I've got the Kuryakyn ones on my 06 SG's. They have been on the bike ever since I bought it new. The only issue I have had are the screws rusting and the little rubber washers deteriorated. I went to West Marine and got some cute little Allen screws and some nylon washers and have had no problems. The air flow is good and is noticeable when shut (no extra air). I also had the Kuryakyn heat deflectors for the rear cylinder. They are good, but I recently replaced them with the HD ones. I like them a bit better because they fit tighter in. The only problem with them is the installation with the engine in the bike. If you don't have patience and small hands you better let someone else do it, and keep an eye on the hardware when it gets away from you.I have large hands and they bled a little, and the hardware that got away is still away, never found it. More than what you wanted but that's what happens with me.

I have the tinted Kuryakyn Dragon Wings (HD also sells them reboxed) and they have worked well for the last 3 years.  Freedom Wings also makes them but they don't fit that well against the fairing when closed.  HD also has a set that says they fit either 07 or 08 and up and they can be made to fit on older bikes.   Do a search on this site and it will tell you how to use them (mainly they mount with 4 holes to the fairing as our older bikes have only 3 mounting holes).
I would but the Dragon Wings again.

I have the Freedom Wings and I love them.
I would not have a fairing bike without adjustable wind deflectors.

They do leave a small gap against the fairing, no noticeable air movement through the gap though.

I would check out the new HD ones and see how easily the operate on the fly!!

I have had both the Freedom Wings and the HD deflectors and prefer the HD deflectors.  They fit better and look better - IMO!   :2vrolijk_21:

I have the re-boxed HD (Kuryakyn) adjustables on my 07 SEUC and the tinted HD adjustable on my Street Glide.  Both work great with the new style HD deflectors a little easier to operate while riding, but you won't go wrong with either.   :2vrolijk_21:

I'm partial to the Freedom Wings myself.  No pros, no cons.  I just like 'em.

I've had both the Freedom wings and the stock HD deflectors on the '08.  Both worked about the same.  After 20000 miles I had to tighten the screws on the Freedom wings.  I wouldn't change from one to the other but if I was buying one I'd go with the Freedom Wings. The reason:

God, I hate to give this forum another part complain about, but MoCo had a bunch of the deflectors crack.  Mine have a slight crack at the pivot hinge but haven't come apart.  My buddy had his come apart driving down the road and after 6 weeks the dealer just pulled a set off the parts wall and gave him one since the warrenty replacement hadn't come in yet.  Apparantly their where alot of them that broke.  I have no idea if it was a batch or time period or if they're even better now, but I just wanted to through that warning out there. It's probably caused by excessive heat causing the fairing saket to leak but there will probably be product improvement campaign to enhance the function.  Did that cover all the smart a$$ responses in one sentance or what!!!   :orange:

I have the 09 HD ones this user has. I did not drill the 4th hole and they work and fit great. They are easy to adjust at any speed.

Okay, all great responses to my questions. Thank you.

Another question would be; on the Kuryakyn site it calls the wings 1108 Dark Smoke Dragon Wing but looks chrome in the picture. Can anyone elaborate on this? I don't want to order the things and get them and it isn't anything like I thought it would be.

I want something that matches my wind shield, not another piece of chrome.

Thanks

The 1108's are smoked.  The 1117's look like chrome.  I have the 1108's with a Clearview windshield and they match well.  If you are using the stock HD windshield, the 1108's are lighter in color.  The 1117's would not look good on a yellow bike.  Hope this helps.
