V&H Monster Ovals for 2010 SEUC?
« on: January 22, 2010, 10:22:57 AM »

I saw (and heard) a set of these installed on a 2009 and they looked/sounded great.  He had the full monte done including headers, race tuner, changed air filter, etc.  I'm thinking about just doing the slip-ons for sound.

Since I am only considering slip-ons, will I need to race tune after install?  I am going to leave the stock air filter in place.

Do you think I will get some good sound without installing the complete system?

Anybody have an "H" stand installed on their UC?  Love it or hate it?

V&H told me the MO are not nearly as loud as the Hi-out slip-ons.  How loud were the MO's?  Anyone using the Hi-out puts?

i had a set of monster ovals on a 09 flhx. i traded the 09 off for a 10 flhxse, since they wouldn't fit on the new bike i gave them to my dad who has a flhtcuse. both bikes have stock headers and i absolutely love them on both bikes. if could have put them on my flhxse i would of. dad did do the race tuner and stage 1 air filter.

I will share my experiences with my 2010 Limited and Monster Ovals:

Step 1
Objective: Make the Bike sound like a Harley
What as Done: Installed MO Slip-ons with no other modifications.
Results: Great Sound, objective achieved :orange:

Step 2
Objective: Improve engine performance
What I Did: Installed Stage 1 air filter and TSS Map.
Results: Could not really feel any improvement in the seat, but did notice an increase in overall sound level.  I can now set off neighbor"s car alarm as I drive by.  Becoming aware of  drome during acceleration. :confused5:

Step 3
Objective: Improve engine performance and reduce Heat
What I Did: Installed V & H Power Duals Head pipe, SE High Compression Pistons, SE MVA heads, SE 255 Cams, Uploaded new Map, (will dyno later)
Results: Could really feel the improvement in the seat, love the low rpm torque band, big increase in overall sound level. The exhaust drome is now a problem.  This drome is noticeable with RPM is over 2K.  Went from a 1/2 to 3/4 helmet thinking that the helmet would reduce the drome.  The helmet did reduce the overall noise, but doesn't not reduce the drome.

The best way I can explain this is to equate it to white noise.  When the RPM get over 2K I can hear the exhaust firing cycle but the overall noise between these firing cycles is a very heavy low pitch.

What i am thinking is that the way these Monster Ovals are designed that they produce an exceptable low rumble tone when installed on bikes up to stage 1 upgrades.  When used on stage 2's or above the mass and weight of these pipes amplifies the low rumble tones to levels that some riders are unable to tolerate.

Whats Next: :confused5:
I am thinking changing the MO to Rush Slip-on, may reason is that Rush offers different size baffles.
or
Replace the Vance & Hines Power Duals to their Dresser Duals, thinking that Dresser Dual will change the pitch of the resonance.

Would appreciate any other thoughts on this.

I have the MO slip ons on my 2009 SEUC -

Love them and the sound - at all speeds

It is not annoying, as I can hear the radio at all times

I heard them on 110 street glide. To me they sounded like what a budget subwoofer is to high end audio. In other words, they lacked definition and accuracy. The tone was low but muddy sounding like is was in a barrel. Considering the size and open container like design of the MO's it kinda is like a barrel to me. Sorta like those 18" subwoofers that young people put in there cars. Ya, it's bass but not musical and rather annoying. The "bass in a barrel" type drone I heard would fatigue me after a very short time.

Personally, if was considering V&H, I'd go with the new twin slash ovals. Better sound (in my opinion) and identical dyno.
