International Motorcycle Show
« on: December 07, 2008, 08:47:36 AM »

It's being held this weekend in Long Beach. I went to pass out flyers and "see what the market is doing". I looked at all the products, and as usual nothing leaped out as a gotta have. I was hoping to find a good low price wheel chock to replace the ones on my Kendon trailer. They got twisted and tweaked from repeated use and metal fatigue. But even the Condor wasn't the deal I was looking for. I'll probably go with Harbor Freight. In fact the only thing I bought was two battery trickle chargers for $19.95 each. Now that I have all these motorcycles I need to keep the batteries fresh.

I did manage to test ride a few bikes. I rode the Yamaha Royal Star Venture which is their version of an Ultra. It was a nice comfy cushy ride. The power was "okay" but nothing to write home about. It had a lot of gizmos that I didn't have time to learn how to work on a 15 mile test ride. It would be a nice bike to have, but it's not for me. The one thing I did notice was the heat coming off the radiator. Even on a cool day as yesterday I felt it on the front of both legs. I could see it becoming as uncomfortable as a Harley in the summer. Then I rode the Kawasaki Concours 14, the "Touring" version of the ZX-14. Years ago I used to ride a ZX-11 and wanted to give it a try. In fact I had been so enamorated by it that I entertained thoughts of buying one. For me that bike is one scary ride. It launches like a rocketship. Bang two gears and you are over 100mph in a blink. The brakes are phenomenal. The shaft drive is well behaved, no "shaft jerking" like the old BMWs. I liked the motorized windscreen which did a pretty decent job of keeping the wind from beating on me. Where as the old ZX-11 used to vent radiator heat right on the leg and roast it in traffic, this one has it vented out and away from the rider. I could feel the heat radiating from the vents. When we got back my arthritic left wrist was hurting from holding myself up on the bars in that sport riding position. Then I rememberd why I no longer ride sport bikes. There is no way I could comfortably ride that bike all day like my Ultra.

I wish BMW had demo rides. I'd like to try that GS1200 dual sport Paris-Dakkar bike. I sat on them at the show and found the upright neutral seating postion very comfortable. Last week I spoke with my old supervisor now living in Colorado. He said he goes to South America on them every year with a bunch of guys. It sounded like something I wanted to do. Maybe once in my lifetime before I'm 70. Anyway I found a guy at the show interested in the Ride Like A Pro course. He has a BMW GS1200 and when be brings it to class that will probably be my test ride. I'm heading back again today. I'm not sure I'll buy anything. Maybe tie downs. I may test ride an Aprilla, KTM or whatever is available. Those demo rides fill up fast. Folks were lining up at 7:30 am to get their names on the list.

All in all, I'm still happy with an Ultra. It's what I want in my "older years". There is something to be said for being comfortable.

Mark.....you know the rules......  :worthless:

Seriously, I would implore you to test one of the 09 HD baggers with ABS before you buy anything else.  I know you'll not get to run up a two lane canyon full of twisties and steep grade like I did my first ride on it, but it will impress you even on flat land straight aways.  The new frame and chassis with the ABS really is remarkable! :2vrolijk_21:

I'm thinkin if you're in love with the Ultra Classic.....you'll really be in love with the new baggers. :2vrolijk_21:

BMW does give demo rides , just have to make an appointment with the right dealer. If you are interested in a bagger I strongly suggest you take a Goldwing out for a 50 to 75 mile test ride . Great power ,exceptional handling and Quality beyond the norm. :2vrolijk_21:

My thoughts exactly BB.
I remember when someone sold their Harley and bought a G/W and was concerned members of this site would have a issue with them being here.
That was unfounded. But I just don't understand the thought process of being on a site for one make and promoting another make. I love being here on this site because I have a love of Harleys and CVO's in particular. Along with the reasons BB mentioned above I also look at resale value. On a apples for apples basis my selection of a Harley Davidson to ride also rewards me a better resale value over a Goldwing. And don't read that wrong I don't buy my Harleys with the thought of how much I will get out of them but I'm very happy that in comparison the values are higher for a Harley. If I was as passionate about Goldwings as I am about Harleys you can bet I would spend more time on a Goldwing site than on any other site.
Now let me really go out on a limb.
I would bet there are more Goldwings traded in on Harley baggers than Harley baggers traded in on Goldwings.
As always JMHO!

As BB said,

Nothing to hate about em, nothing to love about em.
My personal motorcycle experience and expectations requires more from a motorcycle than  that.

Yes, I would agree that it would be a safe bet that more Goldwings were REPLACEDby HD Baggers than the reverse, but doubt that would be true on a straight trade in at an HD dealer.  Most dealers I know figure Goldwing trades at low book less 20% to cover the cost of cleanup, transport and selling fees at an auction.

Had a Gold Wing.  It was a great bike and ran like a well-oiled sewing machine. (Sounded like one too. ::) ) It was comfortable and got great gas mileage, had lots of storage room and served me well for a few years, but like BB and Chip have stated, there was nothing to hate about it, but then again, nothing to love.  At a stop light it just sat there and hummed, didn't pulsate, there just wasn't any soul in the motor, no character.  If you would have put a bubble around me, it would have been like riding a cage.  Just didn't feel like riding a motorcycle.  Riding a Harley gives me that feel.  Is the Gold Wing a good bike, sure it is, but I'll never own another one again, nor will I ever own another BMW again (had a BMW K100LT also) as it didn't have any soul either, it just buzzed.  I love my Hogs and will ride them until I can no longer ride anymore, then I'll bike a Tri-Glide.   :2vrolijk_21:

I've ridden Goldwings before and they are nice comfy torquey bikes. But there are a few things I don't like, starting with linked brakes. I prefer the brakes systems to be separate. ABS yes, but no linked brakes for me. They also have a longer wheel base which makes the turning circle wider. And the look. It just doesn't appeal to me. The front looks like some sort of alien robot thing from the movies. I actually like the looks of the GS Bimmer over the Goldwing even if it is like kissing Spidermans sister.

Today I rode the '09 Ultra. Niiiiiiice. I could see myself on that! Halfway through the ride I pulled up next to the guy on the SERG and asked if he wanted to swap. We did and I rode the SERG back. Not much difference from the one I rode a couple of months ago at an open house. Almost no wind protection, and with my short build I felt stretched out on it. Then I rode an 883 Sportster. That beat the HELL out of me. At 60-70 I was maxed out and so was the bike. I scraped it in a few corners. Finally I rode a Heritage. I was very surprised. It was like night and day compared to my old 1991 EVO Heritage. Smooth with little to no vibration. I dragged those boards too.

I like ALL bikes, I just happen to prefer Ultras. My next HD will be a CVO Ultra, probably an '07. Hope to have it by summer.

That's exactly what I meant.  It's been a few years back that I was riding an Ultra Classic.  Test road a Goldwing and was very surprised at the power and speed of that big ol' thing so I bought it.  My road dogs jibbed me for a few days but they let if go and I was still riding with them.  But it just wasn't the same......wasn't the same for me, even though they were accepting of it.  Three months later I sold it and went and bought another Ultra Classic.  However, nice of a bike it is, it's still not a Harley......nor is it the lifestyle.

You don't know my sister . [do you] :huepfenlol2:
As for promoting one bike over another, Unlike some of my brethren , I love all bikes !!! I don't give a rats ass what you ride as long as you ride.
If you are a Harley fan that's great but talking trash about something you know nothing about is wrong. I am well aware that I am a guest and I try to stay neutrial ,but when some one asks for an opinion I WILL give one.

If you are 6"2" or better, skip the Goldwing. terrible sitting position with no place to stretch out with those heads in the way.
