What is the difference between an FXB and a FXDB?
« on: December 06, 2008, 08:26:40 PM »

I think the D is for Dyna. How much of a difference is there between the two.

I went shopping at the dealer the other day with my Chrome Cash, looking for some goodies for the bike. Brought Deb along and we ended up using all the certs on heated gear for her (all in the discount rack and great prices).

I spent enough to get this years "spend this amount and get this gift" thing.
The "Motorcycles of the 1990's Holiday Collector Set".

The list the first Dyna model as the Sturgis. Seems contradictory since the Sturgis actually came out a decade earlier, but it is an FXB.

So that is what leads me to my question.

BTW, in years past your purchases added up to accumulate the sales required to get the gift. This year it is a single purchase (1 or more items).

The FXB was the original Sturgis and was the first machine H-D offered with a final belt drive. The Platform is FX 4-speed; essentially a blacked out Low Rider with twin belt drives. The Dyna came along 11 years later in 1991. The only rubber mounted powertrain offered in '80-'81 was on the FLT.

The FXR platform replaced the FX 4-speed. The Dyna platform later replaced FXR and took its styling cues from the FX 4-speed.

The first Dyna’s were special models; one was a remake of the 1980-81 Sturgis and the other was the Dyna Daytona.

So the Dyna is a rubber mount and that is the main chassis difference?

My confusion was the labeling on the collectible set. If you don't know better you would think the Sturgis came out in 91.

Yes, in the same vein that the FLT is a rubber mounted FLH.
The Wide Glide went through the same transformation; introduced in 1980, displaced by the Softail and reborn later as a Dyna.

My confusion was the labeling on the collectible set. If you don't know better you would think the Sturgis came out in 91.

Explains all, but why would the moco mislead the un-informed into thinking the Sturgis came out in 91, at least that is my take on it since I can recall salivating over a Sturgis back when I bought my Low Rider, but just couldn't come up with the extra coins to buy the TB.

Below, my 82 with the spcial emblem on the fender - wish I still had it.

It could be a conspiracy of some sort; although it doesn't say "the first Sturgis", it says, "The first Dyna model was the 1991 Sturgis."

BTW, that’s a great photo of your FXSB, Low Rider. Custom wheels; looks like Metzeler rubber. I remember that H-D put the Eagle on the front fender of all machines produced in 1982. H-D’s buyback from AMF occurred in the summer of ’81, which would have been during the beginning of ’82 model year production. The Eagle commemorated H-D’s buyback.

It occurred to me that with the exception of a few aesthetic pieces, out of the box, your ’82 Low Rider was practically identical to the original ’80 and ’81 Sturgis,. Mechanically they were the same machine.

Thanks, was probably my favorite bike, 50 thousand miles and all I ever did to it was tires, plugs, oil, couple of batteries and a chain or two. Never failed me.
The rubber I don't remember, and the wheels were cool, looked really neat reflecting off the Jersey Barriers!

The Eagle commemorated H-D’s buyback.

Yep, pretty much, except for the neat black and red striping and of course the twin belts, which is why I really wanted it.

My favorite pic of the bike below, with my then 5-6 year old princess
