Looking at trailers , seeking comments
« on: January 01, 2009, 11:30:40 AM »

I've been looking to buy a trailer to haul LD around as well as have one to use to move stuff we don't need out here in CA to our place on Sebago Lake in Maine. I've found a company up in Ontario CA (near CA Speedway) that Mfgrs all aluminum trailers. They have a 5 x 8 on Ebay as I type this. The name of the company is Swiss Trailers and the product looks to be top quality. Has anyone heard of or bought from these folks ? Is there any reason why I should avoid an all aluminum trailer ? I am thinking of buying a 6 x 12 and it weighs in at 600lbs empty with 15" wheels and tires, loading ramp, tongue jack, electrics etc. Price for that size is $1,995 plus sales tax. That's more than I planned on spending, but less than a Kendon single bike unit and I can use this for a lot more than just hauling LD around.

Comments please, keeping in mind that $2k is the MAX I can possibly spend

Finally found it.  Looks fine BB.  Fenders on the wheel.  Rear gate that looks long enough to be a safe ramp.  Open space enough you could bolt a tool box down if you wanted.  Assume they're using decent tires.  It's not a solid mount axle.  The big concern that immediately jumps to mind is the inside length though.  If it's eight foot from the front rail where the tire would rest to the rear gate my Road Glide wouldn't fit wouldn't fit with the tour pak on.  Not sure how much length would be gained with the tour pak removed.  Just make sure LD has room to stretch out and be comfortable.

Brian,
JMHO, but I'd prefer a 2 axial trailer due to the ease of backing and they track better on the interstate at higher speeds. You may be able to find a good used one on Craig's list or E-Bay. They are not too hard to find around this area ( southern right coast ) for 2K or less.
Good luck on whichever you choose and Happy New Year!

Although you've just posted this not long ago, I don't want you to think that you're being ignored..... I guess it took me too long to find the ebay site and finish typing my reply...

Never heard of the company, but did go to the ebay site to take a look.  From building a couple trailers myself, it looks to be of good quality.  It looks like they might have mixed a couple pictures between option.  One has removeable side rails and the other have bolt on side rails.  Sometimes getting rid of the side rails is very helpful when loading stuff to haul.

Maybe someone has been personally involved with them and can shed more light on your question.

Later.....

Big B

Im going to second the Craigslist recommendation..if you remember the big bastard trailer that I have...( ok, WE have, me and a couple of co-owners)   I paid 3 Gs total for a 7x16 Tandem enclosed   it can be found and i think enclosed would be important for you and LD   and the tandem wheels really do make a diff!

good luck!

I have a steel trailer just like the alum. one in the pic.  It is great for getting the bike from place to place. My gate has a chain so I can actually wrap the chain around the back bar and leave the gate on an angle (a few inches) to make room. My gate is steel and is very heavy.  It has never moved or closed when traveling when I have done this.  I don't recommend this but it worked for me.  My only hang up with this style trailer is that once the front tire is on the trailer and the back one is still on the gate/ramp.  The frame seems to hit.  I do not like this at all and it has made me want to look for a different trailer. Like and enclosed.

I use an Aluminium trailer built by ALUMA Trailers, and really like it for several reasons....

1) Light weight and easy to maneuver around by hand.
2) Outside storage is not a problem, '' No Rust Factor ''
3) Loading ramp tucks under
4) Multiple use 4X8 trailer
5) Priced new years ago $2,700

Brian,

Given the height of the trailer and the length of the ramp, you may want to do a little math to be sure the bike has enough clearance to not bottom on the frame when loading/unloading.

The trailer looks to be well constructed - and aluminum is nice - easier to maintain for sure.

My only other comment is I sure prefer two axles when towing any distance.  Flat tires are a completely different experience on crowded interstates with a single axle trailer...

Couple caveats

1st Don, I am looking at their 6x12 as opposed to the one you found on Ebay. I posted that so you could see how they're made
Next, I am going to be towing this with an old 4l V6 Explorer so I am trying to keep the weight down. I'd love to have a big enclosed trailer but I'd need a big V8 truck to tow it. My request for comment here is more about the issue of an all aluminum trailer. Are they prone to cracking at the seams because they flex easier than steel ? That type of thing. Sorry I wasn't more specific Lastly, I have been searching Craig's list and Ebay for a couple months. I was sure I'd find something at a really low price WITHIN DRIVING DISTANCE of San Diego because of the economy, but have so far not found anything in the price range of these Swiss Trailers. Remember, I am on a fixed income now and have to budget beyond what little I can make playing day trader  :vrolijk27:

BB, This one is still on Craigslist, all you have to do is clear off the old wood to make a nice single axle bike trailer. Mega Millions offer still stands!

Brian, here are some recent Kendon listings for LA.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/search/sss?maxAsk=&minAsk=&query=kendon&srchType=&hasPic=

Here's another up in Oxnard that's priced less than a grand and recently listed.

Another in Camarillo that's $1200 and at least appears to be in pretty good shape with reported minimal use.
