Talon... Rented a bike out of Geneva a few years ago and toured the Swiss and Italian Alps.  Recorded 13 pass videos.  Here's a few...

http://www.farson.com/video/alp1.wmv (Neufenen Pass, CH)
http://www.farson.com/video/alp2c.wmv (Gardena Pass, IT)
http://www.farson.com/video/alp4c.wmv (Susten Pass, CH)

It is a very special place for two wheels.

Craig
I watched that too and was also impressed by the scenery/roads.
Chuckled when the cop chased them on foot for twenty minutes(and caught them when they stopped at the hotel) to give them a ticket for going through a red light
For some reason I thought all Europeans drove on the wrong side of the road but in Italy and Switzerland they were on the right . Shows what I know about that part of the world.

I was wondering out loud to the wife about traveling Europe on bikes and I was wondering what it would cost to ship our bikes over.
If anyone knows please feel free to chime in or is it easier and cheaper to rent overseas.

Hi Rob - I guess it depends how long you are planning to come over for. Me and the good lady spent five and a half weeks in the USA in the summer of 2008 and we flew our bikes across with us and completed our 8,000 mile tour on them.

Heres the link for the Company we used.

http://www.motorcycleexpress.com/

It was probably cheaper for us to do it this way because of the amount of time we were away. For three weeks or less I would say that it is not cost effective to ship your own bike and that renting would represent a better option. Bearing in mind how much the Dollar has strengthened recently it may well be a good time to come to Europe as you will be getting much more bang for your buck. Coming into the UK and then going on into Europe is an easy option and of course you will have the ease of communicating in English when you pick up your bikes.

Here's a link to a rental company near were I live.

http://www.hadrianhdtours.co.uk/

You could  of course consider shipping your bike which would be a cheaper option, but the downside of that is the loss of your bike for about four weeks either side of your trip.

Hers a pic of my missus at the top of the Stilfserjoch pass in Italy. Great riding in the Alps.

Good luck with your plans.

Sounds like you need to start making some plans Craig and we'll see about tagging along. Best start brushing up on your Dutch/Flemish/German/French/Italian/Spanish/ hah.

WOW you can see yourself coming and going on that stretch.
We are thinking about doing a 6 month ride for our 25th anniversary in a couple of years so I am starting a bit early. :2vrolijk_21:

I sometimes think that the planning is nearly as much fun as the actual trip. I wouldn't like to think how many hours I must have put into last years trip, but we started thinking about it nearly ten years before we actually did it. The planning for the Zumo was done, re-done, done again, altered, tweaked, smoothed and fettled many many times before we finally managed to get in everything we wanted to do. The up side of that was that we then only had to get up each morning, hit the button for that days ride and off we went.

If you want any help or suggestions just say the word.

Here's another shot in the Alps - French Alps this time.

Hi Rob,

I am sure you are aware of the H.O.G. Fly & Ride program. Well, Frankfurt, Germany is a station for this, and it just takes three hours on the motorway to get into where Europe starts to be really beautiful. The Frankfurt Harley dealer is Harley-Factory, probably the largest in Europe, and they usually have ten Ultra Classic E-Glides for the Fly & Ride program. If the date makes it possible, it would be my pleasure to meet you upon your arrival into Frankfurt and help to get you sorted out. Just let me know!

Ride safely,
Louis

Not this year Nige, Still working, but people are getting the boot on a regular basis. I'm paying everything off, just in case. I was going to do a major motor upgrade, had to put that on hold again! But if things get better and I still at work I'd like to do it in a year or two.
