Fxstsse 07 Engine upgrades
« on: January 17, 2009, 09:12:10 AM »

I want to ask the advise of the group as my 110 motor is going in for the recall head  gaskets.    The dealer tells me that its a great time for some upgrades as the labour will be mostly on them.   I am thinking pistons, heads  work and cams and am wondering about the best possible combinations while   keeping   the driveability  reasonable.  Advise from those gone down this road would help alot.

Stick in the Andrews 32H cams, Zippers air filter, and a set of pipes {your choice} and some tuner , SERT,PC, TFI ,Etc  and you will be happy. Dewey

At 11700 miles I had the 0905 campaign done. At the same time I sent the new heads out to Heldreth Performance and had them ported and polished. Did not have them decked. Put gear drive TW7HG woods cams in. Heavy duty springs. I was looking to get a cooler running motor and a little more Torque. 1700 miles so far I like it. Seems to run real nice. No funny sounds. It's been real wet and cold in Seattle.
121.49 Torque and 107.77 Horses. I think with a new TB could get more but its fine for now.

1st you have to decide on a budget! This group will spend your money faster than an ex-wife! Have you done Pipes, A/C, ECM? If not, those are the first things to get done. This is the time to have upgrades done but no one said you had to do the "product enhancement" NOW. You have two years from the date of the letter to get it done. You may want to wait, take your time and think about this before you have it done.

Thanks for the advice.    I am planning on a set of pistons and while heads  are off then port & polish,   hopefully  the head man is good.  I want to keep the compression to around 10-10.5 to 1.   I don't want to have issues trying to find proper fuels and I hope this keeps some of the heat down as well.  The  cams I have still not settled on as of yet ,  will have to see the final #'s on the build first.   The reason I am going this direction is that it makes no sense to me to break the seal on a  non leaking motor for a recall  just for some gaskets.   This way the re and re heads are  on Harley's tab for labour,  pistons well a wrist pins are easy and I  can pay for the honing .  Just trying to get a little more  handlebar pull ........

First, welcome to this Great Site!!! :2vrolijk_21:

If you're putting 10.5:1pistons in, DO THE CAMS TOO! Otherwise, keep the flat tops! Headwork and compression with those stock EPA cams would be a waste of $$$, and possibly not even run as well as stock. ;)

Thanks  again,  yes  for sure cams will be done, I just need to  research a bit more before a purchase,  I only want to do this once....I know that I really like the  full low to high midrange power,   so I am looking for the right set up.  Overall  I"m looking for like 100 hp and maybe 110 or more tq ,  nothing huge for a displacement this size and it should ride nice and hopefully last.

SE 10.5's, headwork, and S&S 585G cams. (If your crank runout can handle gear drive. Otherwise, stay with the chain if runout's over 0.003", ideally 0.002" or less) The right intake, throttle body (which you'll also need!), and exhaust! That light bike'll fly man! No need to go with really big cams. Should be good for 110 HP/115 Ft-Lbs easy! ;)

You can get those numbers without headwork or pistons.  You can get those with cams, A/C, exhaust and tuner and keep the reliability. :2vrolijk_21:
