In for the 905 Campain
« on: January 13, 2009, 03:56:24 PM »

Took my bike in for the 905 campain last week and asked them call me when they get it torn down. Got the call to day so I went by to take a look. Some of the problems were obvious, like the excessive tapping in the top end. The spring retainers were hitting the rocker boxes. The oil leak on rear head was typical, but the one thing that caught us by surprise was the amount of carbon build up on the pistons. The bike did not use any oil to speak of maybe 1/2 qt between changes. Talked with the Mechanic and and told him of the difference in temperatures I measured with inferred gun, between front and rear cylinders, 260 FRT and 340 R, and he said there must have been an intake leak to very the temps that much. He is saying that there shouldn't be any more than 20 to 30 degrees between the cylinders. We looked at the intake manifold and the rear gasket did appear to have been leaking. So they have ordered new cylinders pistons and rings to go along with the 905 kit. All of the crank runouts were.002" or less. They seam to be taking care of me on this. Just hate to have to go thru the break-in again.

I got mine back a couple of weeks ago but the weather has been so bad I haven't had a chance to ride it since I got back.  The ride from the dealership was it so far.  I had 7,500 miles at the time I took it in with no problems to that point.  I figured since the center crank bolt was involved I should go ahead and have it done.  I didn't ask if they found anything unusual and they didn't say.  I figured I might be better off not knowing.  I did notice on the way home from the dealership that the top end was noticeably quieter.

Tbone, they probally clearanced the rocker boxes so that the valve spring retainers would not rub the rocker boxes.

That's probably what they did, made a big difference.

Back from the 905 campain. I put 350 miles on it yesterday and feel good about the repair. No drips, top end quieter seams to be OK.
Engine still a little tight. Gona put some more miles on it today.

Of the three new harley's I've owned I break them in all the same- fist 50 miles pretty easy after that ride it like you stole it but try not to hold any constant rpms for too long. after 500 anything goes. I've never had one bit of problems this way. I just got my bike back from the upgrade and while it was in I had .010 over 10.5 to 1 pistons and SE251 cams installed. Since there is snow on the ground here in IL I'll have to wait a little bit for the official test ride, but this is exactly how I'm gona break this one in and I don't expect any issues with it.
