Garmin Nuvi 255
« on: February 04, 2009, 09:12:14 AM »

I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 255 for use in my vehicles.  Is there any reason that the Nuvi 255 won't work on my SE Ultra?  I'm thinking about a handlebar mount and I have the Wild 1 Chubby Bagger Bar that is 1.25" dia.  I ran across this mount on eBay.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=190279766097

Any thoughts?

I understand the Nuvi is not waterproof.  Not a problem as far as I'm concerned.  I rarely ride in the rain and if I would get caught in rain I'll just take the Nuvi off and store it.  So being waterproof is a non-issue for me.

Thats what I do on my Road King.  ;D Works great and when I stop somewhere, I just pop the thing in my pocket. Nothing but the mount is left on the bike!

As you said, rain is not something that worries you. The unit should be fine as is. However, I'd consider the following:
- Is the speaker strong enough so that you can hear the directions while riding? The 255 has no line out and no Bluetooth.
- How good is the display in the sun? The bike-specific units have very good screens.

Ride safely,
Louis

Louis,

Good points.  I'll just have to try it and see.  I assume others have tried this setup.

Any suggestions on mounts?  How about the one I posted from eBay?

Regarding to the mount, it does not mention the 255 in the list of units. Are you sure it is compatible? I bought a Nuvi for my car in the U.S. and it had only a snap-on cradle to the suction cup thing. Also would wonder if you'd have to take it off from the ball all the time, since that may lead to the hold become loose. Or am I completely loosing track here?

Ride safely,

I also do the same. Stop when it`s going to rain and store it. Why pay all that money for a waterproof one.

Never tried to use the sound on mine. I keep it cut off all of the time. Ours is a 650 and the screen is pretty good. No problems except in the worst sunlight at certain angles.
Check Mount Guys for a mount for that unit. On the RK I bought a mount from them and modified it to mount to my windshield frame directly in front of me. Works great and when I don't need it on the bike, it’s in the car.
Good luck!
