The fish in Boston
So, this guy is told he has to go to Boston, on business.
He's never been there before, and he loves to sample the local food wherever he
goes, so he researches the local delicacies, and discovers, unsurprisingly,
that fish is the most popular, with Boston being a coastal city. In
particular, he reads that he should try a little known fish, called scrodd, a
very localised delicacy, so he makes a note to try it if he has the time.
The week of the visit duly arrives, and he lands in Boston, books into his
hotel, and gets on with his program of meetings. All goes very well, so on
his last day, he has the evening to himself, and decides he'll eat out and try
the scrodd.
Down to reception, and calls a cab. The cab arrives, and he jumps in the back.
"Where to, mister?" says the cabbie.
"Can you take me somewhere I can get scrodd?" Replies our man.
"Mister, I musta been asked that a thousand times,"
says the cabbie, "but it's the first time I've been asked in the pluperfect
subjunctive!"
