Replacing Tires On 2004 SEEG
« on: February 23, 2009, 11:52:43 PM »

I'm getting ready to replace the tires on my 04 SEEG and are looking for suggestions.
Is it possible to go with a wider rear tire ? If so how wide and what front tire to go along with it ?

Thanks

If I remember correctly, the '04 touring bikes have a 130 or 140 rear tire. I think you can push to 150 in the stock rear end with the right wheel. If'n you wanna get past that -- say 160, 180, 200 -- you're gonna need to replace the back end of the frame. There are lots of kits out there -- FBI and KlockWerks to name a couple -- but they are expensive and most require cutting the frame. Not a job for the timid...

150 might require trimming the belt guard a little.

Nothing larger will fit without $$$modifications.

The 150 does not have the load rating for a touring bike, loaded up. If you use your bike as a bar hopper and occasional trip bike then the 150 might be ok. Dont expect but about 5000-6000 miles from the 150.

You can go to a 150 on the stock wheel, just like Rick said, no bigger, my wheel/tire
guy cussed me out for going with it because it took him forever to put it on the rim.

Like Hogasm says, some bikes might need to be trimmed, all be different.
I have one on mine and no mods needed to be made.

With my new rear wheel, I went 160 with a 5.5" rear wheel.
Need to get it on and see if I need to be trimming anything.

The most important consideration when buying a replacement tire is load rating.  As hogasm noted, the 150's I've personally checked out that would fit (barely) our bikes do not have a high enough load rating (stock rating is 908 lbs), and unless you just like living on the edge I wouldn't recommend going with a lesser rated tire.

a 5.5"won't fit without a new swingarm, lengthened trans output shaft, spaced out primary, lengthened starter jackshaft....

A 4.25 will fit nicely with a little trimming on the belt guard :2vrolijk_21:

Ah yes, did I say 5.5...That was my dreamer in me.
I just checked my invoice and sure enough, like you said
it is a 4.25 and now I can rest easy...Thanks for setting me straight.
Still need to get that baby on too!
Tim...Get off your duff and do the install!
