Automatic Volume Control with Headset?

My headset cable broke so I was forced to listen to the radio over the speakers. I noticed the AVC worked great. I have tried to adjust it while using headsets and it doesn't seem to do anything. Am I doing something wrong? It is a pain to talk at stoplights with other bikes as I have to manually turn the volume down, but when just using speakers the volume adjusted lower by itself. Is this a feature (bug) in the HK radio?

I've noticed the same thing, so I think it's a "feature" that AVC doesn't work over the headset.
