Hard to fuel ?
« on: March 28, 2009, 03:05:11 PM »

Has anyone made any mods to get gas into the tank faster ?  It takes way too long to top off my 09 serg .  I'm about ready to get the drill out.   The three vent hole aren't large enough.   what have you done ?

I use one of these.  http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448772603&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302290991&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302290991&bmUID=1238269395680&bmLocale=en_US Slip it on the filler, fill until it shuts off, and you're done.  Anytime I try and top off more I end up with a big mess anyway, so this is fast and easy.

Good question there slorider.
I have the same issue.
When the pump nozzle quits I can still get almost another gallon in the tank if I spend the time.
To me it's kinda stupid to have a 6 gallon tank that hold 5 gallons easily and then takes 10 minutes for the 6th gallon to to get in.
I'm not sure the Harley product listed above really addresses this issue, but I agree slorider, something needs to be done.
Definately something to ponder on!
Good question!

Yes, I have noticed the same thing. I have given up trying to fill it much after the initial pump cutoff.

Fillit right to the bottom of the filler insert every time, but only on the side stand.  Don't set the MC upright even though you can get more gas in, if you do it will very quickly go right to the charcole canister and the MC won't run, the tank can't vent.

So, how do you do this ever time with ease.  Don't put the nozzel into the tank to push up the rubber crap....

Take the pump nozzel in your right hand, with your left hand lift up the rubber venting crap far enough that pump will turn on (they actually make a plastic part to slip in to hold it there), I just hold it with my hand.  Put just the tip of the nozzel into the tank, just through the filler insert.  Turn it on and watch it fill, with a little practice you can fill it right to the bottom of the insert very quickly.  Then 3 of 4 little shots of gas more as it all settles and you have a full tank.  I can put 5.4 gal in my 5 gal tank with this method every time, very quickly.

And if you want a little more, stand the MC up and top it off, however you need to hit the road right away of it will run down into the charcole cannister.

Kinda sounds like the Calf. nozzles. I'd never seen such a mess as last year trying to fill up. Pull up on that part and hold half way out of the tank. What a PITA.

I see I am not the only one who can only get 5 to 5.2 gallons into the tank.  This is the hardest tank I have ever had to fill on a harley.  No CA nozzles here, just normal ones.

How does that eazy filler by harley work?

Harley part is the same as the McCuff. All details in this video. Have fun!

If there is room for more fuel in my tank after the nozzle shuts off, trying to top it further would be a waste of time for me anyway.  I have to get off the bike by about 4.5 gallons regardless and stretch out my arthritic back and hips so a fuel stop is a welcome relief.

+3 I spilled gas every time I filled up until I started using the Fill-N-Go Fuel Tank Funnel. IMO, it is worth spending a few dollars and picking one of these up.

The McCuff sounds good in theory, but half the time I fill up the automatic nozzle shut-off doesn't work.  I learned several overflows ago not to rely on the auto shut-off so I continue to fill up watching the gas level rise. I'm with sklywag, it's better to watch the tank fill than rely on the pump auto shut-off; with or without the McCuff.
