Rattle'n saddlebag locks
« on: May 23, 2009, 04:41:31 PM »

Besides louder mufflers does anyone have a fix for this?  My saddlebag keylocks are loose and rattle.  I have looked and it appears at first glance there is no way to tighten them.  To be clear I am talking about the barrel that you would slide the key in to lock an unlock if you did not use the key fob or dash switch.  Both sides are loose and I can hear them when I am riding through my neigborhood.

If I remember correctly from changing the latches you should be able to tighten them up. Get a cold :drink: take the saddlebag off and take the latch appart. It's got to be an easy job if I was able to switch the latches. :D :D

They are held on with two screws.  Go from the inside and screw in to the out latch cover.  Open the latch all the way and look "up" from the bottom side and you'll see them.

I knew it was easy since I was able to swap the latches out. :D :D

So the guts of the barrel lock itself are the problem?  And the mechanism still locks and unlocks?  Weird.  In any case the locks themselves aren't seviceable in any way I'm aware.  Get your key code and order a pair.

I took the lock out of the handle/release and determined it is not something that can be tightened.  In the process I did squirt some lithium grease in the barrel...stuck the key in it and worked it back and forth.  This did seem to help a little, its just that there is enough slop in the mechanism that it rattles.

It may be enough to fix it, I will find out tomorrow.  Thanks for the input.

There were some other screws that were a little on the loose side so I snugged them up and hope the combo will be enough to fix it

Saddlebag lid, latch and cover screws are some of the (many) fasteners on the bikes that tend to loosen up over time.  They're on the 10 minute or so walk-around of tightening critical or likely fasteners I do rather than just there scratching my nuts everytime the oil is draining.
