strange noise
« on: August 20, 2010, 05:44:08 AM »

Something strange happened while I was riding from sturgis to devils tower. I've just bought a 2009 cvo road glide. It has 5000 miles on it. We rode about 175 miles and it was a hot day, we pulled over to take some pics. When I got back on and started the bike I had it in first gear with the clutch pulled in and the bike sounded like the starter was trying to start the bike while it was running. later on the trip back it made the same noise on the road in first and second gear rolling down the highway. It has not done it since. I'm going to take it in to the dealer, but we all know what happens when you tell the dealer about your strange noise. Has this happened to any of you guys ??? Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Bet its your Compensator nut being loose...sounds like all-hell is breaking loose in your primary!  Same thing happened to me...there's other posts on this site as well.

My brother was behind me and to my right with his Electra Glide and it sounded like he was trying to get in gear without pulling the clutch.  I turned and looked at him with a WTFO look then realised it was ME!  A quick ride to the local dealer and they diagnosed right away...said it was under warranty but couldn't get in for a couple days so I took it to a trusted local HD mechanic who pulled the primary, took off the compensator nut, reapplied the "correct" locktight and re-torgued ... I think it was like 160 foot pounds!  All-good ever since.

Watch those techs, if they are busy and in a hurry, a 1/2" impact gun suits them fine. >:(

Ok, I keep hearing about this compensator issue. So I have a question for those of you that experienced and know it is it.

My bike has 7600 miles on it.There are times that the bike is hard to start even after running for a while, but the thing I noticed most is I will be riding it and when I change gears and apply gas it sounds like I have a huge rock bouncing inside the engine. It doesn't do it all the time. When I first noticed it two weeks ago I thought front tire kicked up a rock and it hit inside the fender, but than I heard it a few more times. The Harley dealer just replaced the adapter gasket between oil cooler and oil filter and also replaced lifters due to excessive noise. So not sure if I never heard this noise prior because of the lifters.

Any help would be appreciated.
