Metal chips on primary drain plug
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:43:13 PM »

Wanted to warm all the fluids up before I drained em, so I took about a 50 mile ride. The bike sounds normal and runs perfect. ( But it should with 17,000 miles) The problem is when I drained the primary the magnet on the drainplug was holding about 8 pieces of metal chips. the bigest piece being about 1/4"x1/8" . I'm not too alarmed to see a small amount of metal grime but chips is a different story. Have appointment next week to figure the problem out. It's a 2003 SERK and I'm glad I have the extened warranty. I hate the thought of someone breaking it open though.

Sooner or later, that's gonna happen anyway.  Simple "do it yourself" task.  Now would be a great time to install a Baker OD6 and change your primary gearing to 3.37.  JMHO.

Could be pieces of primary chain. Found one piece on my old wide glide once and had to get a new primary chain.

  1)Check the Comp nut
2)check for play in the stator rotor
3)check ring gear & starter bendix

Chunks not good  :(

If it wasn't under waranty I would probably go with the Baker 6 speed , but sence it is I'll let the HD dealer pay the bill his time.

BTW - My dealer NEVER found the problem even with multiple complaints for hot starting.

If it looks like the above picture then it will most likely be this

If the comp sprocket had loosened up at one time and the dealer didn't pull it apart to check for damage, then it could be from the alternator rotor or worse the crank shaft splines.

This is the spacer for a 38 amp alternator after the comp nut loosened up.

This spacer is .020" thick when new. Mine is currently .010", it literally got hammered by the loose comp nut.

Nor sure where the problem is yet. I took the the bike in today with the fragments from the drainplug to show the mech. He guessed it's from the clutch department. Won't know for sure until he looks a little farther. Said he'll call tomorrow with results. Hopeing for for some good news, but expecting ???   :confused5:
