CVO 103/ 6 speed and 3.37 gearing
« on: October 07, 2005, 03:35:51 PM »

I'm trying to get a game plan for the new SEU.  For at least the 2 yr warranty period I don't want to do any engine ( cams/heads) mods, so, I'm kicking around the idea of adding a 6 speed gearset and lowering the primary gearing. In theory it sounds like it would work pretty good at making the usable power/tq feel like it comes on sooner, and with the sixer you wouldn't have to pay the price at freeway speeds.  Anybody here done this mod or have any opinions good or bad?  Still got a couple of months to figure out what to do.  Most of my riding is two up and below 4500rpm.   [smiley=biggthumpup.gif]

Thanks, Robert

I made the gearing change and added the 6 speed gear set on an '03 SERK, along with some engine mods., and I'll have to say that it increased the "smile factor" considerably.  You run through the gears much quicker, and rpm's are about 3,050 at 80 mph in 6th gear.  I know a few others who made this change, and I haven't talked to anyone who didn't like it.

Robert,

I was considering doing the 6 speed change but my dealership said there was a wait to get the parts, so I made the choice to go ahead and have Exhaust, Power Commander and High Flow done along with some very extensive dialing in on a dyno.

You may want to check on availbility of the required parts

Jeff,

The dealer today said they had the gearset in stock, and even if they don't, I've got till December or longer if there are delays with the Black/Char bikes.  I fully intend to do the pipes, breather and RT anyway, the 6 spd and gearing are on top of that. That time of year thay have some pretty good specials on installs etc, and he said if it is installed prior to delivery, it is subject to new vehicle tax and not sales tax saving another 2.25%.
My thinking is that the 6 speed will be OK either way, and if I don't like the gearing, that's a pretty easy change back to stock.

Excellent point Tony.  My first idea was to buy the gearset from one of the  20% off dealers and have my selling dealer do the install, which they agreed to, but when it's all said and done with the dealer discounts, 10% parts and labor and a 5% rebate, plus the tax savings and the warranty, I think my mind is made up. Now if i can get my pocketbook to agree with my mind.  LOL   [smiley=biggthumpup.gif]

I have a Baker 6-speed in my 03 CVO RK. Just great. But, I also have an SE Breather kit, Reinhart True duals and a SE Race Tuner. So I'm running 93ft lbs and 89hp. Stock SE 103 dyno's out at around 86ft lbs and 80hp All those numbers you read about are bench test numbers not real world rear wheel ones. My dealer doesn't hold the Race Tuner over my head on warranty issues. Yours might. Check it out in advance

I just had the complete 6 speed trans. installed on my 05 FBSE & I love it!! Turning 2900 at 80mph. Has plenty of power  to pass with at 70 mph in 6th gear but can down shift to 5th if I really want to go. The difference in price for the complete trans. versus the gear set was not that much. Less hours to do the complete trans.

Hotrod, I guess I should price it both ways as ther should be some value in a brand new complete 5 speed tranny to sell or trade later.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I've talked to a bunch of folks who have gone with the 3.37 , all love it. It essentially raises engine speed 200 rpm per gear.  HD used this ratio for a long time until the EPA regs pushed them to drop it down, just like going to chain drive cams.  Both for noise.  With a 6 speed it makes for a great combo.
