2009 FLHTCUSE4 Handlebars
« on: April 22, 2009, 02:06:11 PM »

OK Guys, help me out here.  My handlebars are just to far away.  Seems that my arms are fully extended and reaching kinda in a downward slant to hold on to this thing.  Finally got the floorbards fixed the way I wanted them,  Got the backrest in the right position after modifications.  But I can't seem to figure out what to do about the handlebars.  I just don't feel comfortable on this bike the way I would like to feel.  I wish I could get them back a couple of inches further, and even raise them up a little.  Several has told me that I need to get the handlebars that comes on the Heritage Classic.  But with the type of throttle setup on these new bikes,  not sure that is an option.  Is anyone else out there having the same type problem.  Any suggestions, tips, clues, anything that I can do to help me hold onto this thing and feel more comfortable is greatly appreciated

The H-D touring handlebars should work in this application; I’ve seen them installed on a ’08 SEUC. At that time H-D didn’t have a PN for a kit; they may by now. If there isn’t a kit available I can get a list of parts for you if you’re interested.

To start with, I don't think the Heritage Classic bars would fit this bike.  The base of your bars need to be pretty wide just to make it out each side of the fairing before they start upward.  Somewhere here on the forum, you may be able to search out the thread that shows a SEUC with ape hangers, and it actually looked nice.  Check out this page and the entire website for Chubby Wild One bars  http://www.wild1inc.com/577jr.html  That will show you some 12.5" apes on an Ultra...those are the WO577's.  I'm not sure if the WO508's will work, but you can check out their site.  The WO508's won't raise you up so much, but they do pull the bars back closer to you.  Anyway, that's a good site to check out for bars.  Check out the 575's also  http://www.wild1inc.com/575a.html  Finally, check out the website for Flanders Handlebars...here's some that are made for the Ultra and they may have some others on that site  http://www.sideroadcycles.com/AmericanMotorcycles/Handlebars/More_HD/D2Ultra_Classic.html  I'm not sure if the fly by wire is any kind of issue or not, but I'm sure that before you order anything, you'll ask the questions to make sure whatever you get will work okay for your bike.

Handlebars are a tough animal to deal with.  It took me 3 sets on my last bike until I found the perfect set for me.  Those were 13.5" Flanders Original Apes.  On my SEUC, luckily, the bars are sitting pretty well and I don't think I'm going to have to change them.  If you have any thoughts of changing your seat at any time, do that first, and then the handlebars.  Your other way around things is just starting with a different seat that moves you forward, like the Harley Reach Seat or something along those lines.  What stinks about going that route is that in their infinite wisdom, Harley put that grey stripe on the seat and also on the tourpack backrest.  If you change the seat, you no longer have a matching set.  To me, that was a terrible idea from the MOCO, since after pipes, the seat is probably one of the big items that many people change in their first several months of ownership.

Hope that provides with a starting point.

I'm not short (6'1"), but the handlebars seem to be a reach for me as well, although I am getting used to it.  I haven't had it on a ride longer than 200 miles yet, so I don't know how I would feel after a long day of riding.

Regarding the Heritage bars, it would be a horrible choice for me.  My last bike was a heritage, and the mini-apes on that bike were too high for me.  I constantly had shoulder pain from the high reach, and was one of the few downsides of the Heritage for me.

I put on 14 inch Wild 1 Chubby bagger bars and they make long rides much more enjoyable than stock for me. I'm 5'11". Here are a few pictures.

That looks great.  I had 13.5" on my last bike, so I know that the 14" isn't nearly as high as they look on there.  That's a really comfortable setup at that height.  I've thought about doing that with mine, but I can't seem to find the time to get everything done that I would like, and I'm actually pretty comfortable with the stock bars and location.  That's why I hate to screw with something that already works for me.  This may be the perfect solution for SE66.

Rheiner....my new scoot looks just like yours except for those apes.  Would ya mine riding it to the east coast of North Carolina and we could trade rides for an afternoon.  I keep hearing how some really like the higher bars,  but I'm not convinced I would.  Although I do want some degree of "pullback" which seems OK in the stock bars to me.

I'm not sure though that I'm likin' the heated seat.  I had a nice Corbin on my RK and even though harder,  it seemed more comfortable.

You have to realize that those bars are not nearly as high as they look.  What's the rise on the stock bars...about 6" or 7"?  I believe with my 13.5" bars, from my shoulders to my hands was still a slight downward slope.

As far as the seat goes, I just got a Pro Pad (sheepskin covered gel pad) and it sure does seem comfortable, and less money than a seat replacement.  If I want my butt warmed more, I can take it off and turn on the seat.  I wonder if the gel pad will warm up if I heat the seat under it.  Hmmm.

Heres a link about the heated gel inserts.

Rheiner, do you have any pics of you on the bike for reference?

Hahaha! I see those, I was wondering if he had any with him on it so I could see the reach so to speak.  :)

I guess I didn't see that "you on the bike" part.  Sorry.  Thought you were losing it, but I guess it was me. :hanged:
