Got the lower legs changed out tonight with new seals, drain plugs, and 6MM alen bolts with washers in the bottom of the legs. Left the upper tubes in the triple trees, removed the retaining rings, and slid the old lowers downward in a slide hammer fashion and the lowers, bushings, and seals came apart easily.
You have to open up the lower bushing so it and the other bushing and seal will come off the upper fork leg.
I ordered a split seal driver from George's Garage that will drive the bushing and seal down in the new lower but could not get enough slide action to fully seat the seal. So I removed the fill caps and loosened the pinch bolts and upper forks slid easily out. As Jim stated, he takes them out of the triple trees.
It is much easier to seat the seals properly to get the retaining rings in and also quite easy to fill them with new oil.
No pictures of the tear down was taken. Hopefully I will have no seal leaks or drain plug leaks. Not a hard job.
Some people have stated they use a piece of 1 1/2 or 2" PCV to set the seal.
A fellow on Ebay has a driver that attaches to the upper fork tube with allens and you use the lower fork leg as a slide hammer against the seal.
The best way is to take the forks out of the trees. You also have to make sure the lower stops stay on the dampners on reassembly.
